Why IIM Shillong for me is a difficult question with an easy straightforward answer. Difficult because the answer may not woo you but I sincerely hope the ending might… So hold on!

WEATHER Popularly known as campus in clouds, our campus sees sun before any other popular MBA institute around 4 AM. We see four seasons in one day considered as one of the attractions campus has. Tall pine trees stands as our legacy and our practices. IIM Shillong missions for sustainable development which is followed by a few institutes across globe.
IIM Shillong organizes Sustainability week for the new batch after having the remedial classes. When we first came to know about it, we were thinking how it would be, what would be taught to us in this week and were not very happy about it but it was altogether different and we really enjoyed it. We were having lectures from 9am to 6pm including two tea breaks and a lunch break. We were given assignments on the daily basis and the unique thing was that we had to maintain a learning journal also wherein we wrote about our learnings for the day. Coming back to the assignments, they were not like typical research work assignments. In fact, they included activities, we were asked to make chart papers, and we made the portrait of one of our group mate (all these assignments were to be done as a group activity), even when we didn’t know to sketch. We were even asked to display our chart papers on the walls. We did activities related to balloon. We were given toffees and chocolates. In short, we were treated and felt like primary kids. On the second last day of the week, we gave the presentation of all of our assignments. Since all the 180 students were there and were giving their point of view on the same theme, we, for the very first time, experienced the real flavour of peer learning. And that day concluded with the creative expression, wherein we had to role play, sing a song, recite poetry or quote, paint, doodle etc. related to sustainability. It was an awesome experience which we didn’t expect from here. And the last day of the week was a long-day trek. We went to see a sacred forest. On that day, we found ourselves in the lap of nature. The cool breeze. The drizzle. The rocky mountains to be climbed upon. Mud in between the trek. Crossing water streams to climb the mountain. We reached a height when clouds were below us. All this experience made our day and gave us long-life memories. And I, personally, feel that this is one of those experiences that we, PGP 18, will always remember and live.
The city of “Shillong” in itself represents beauty which is incomprehensible and can only be felt and admired. My college, IIM SHILLONG, gave this opportunity to me to visit the abode of clouds i.e. the state of Meghalaya for the first time. I was completely mesmerized by the view that I saw from the train’s window on my way to Guwahati. Everything started to be appearing as if suddenly someone had painted everything green. As soon as I felt the first gush of wind blowing down my hair, it was the moment I realised that my decision to come to Shillong was the best one I have ever made. And that never made me contemplate about my choice of joining this prestigious institute.
Indian Institute of Management, SHILLONG is known to most people in the country as the seventh IIM of the nation. Also known as the ‘Campus in Clouds’, it was established in 2007 with a vision of providing good quality management education and research in the North Eastern region of India. Previously the only IIM named after a former Prime Minister of India, the ‘Rajiv Gandhi’ was dropped from the name of the institute after the IIM Bill came into force as a law. As stated by the Director-in-charge of the institute, Prof. Keya Sengupta, “ We identify ourselves as the youngest among the old IIMs ; and the oldest among the new IIMs. As such, we consider it as our responsibility to gather knowledge and experience from the older ones and act as torchbearers for the newer ones, imparting that knowledge and sharing our experience with them”.
IIM Shillong, the campus that is not built as a B-School building but a palace. The campus where the generous nature heartens students to stay ebulliently enthusiastic and reap leadership skills. The campus where little droplets suspended in the air would hit your face and keep you fresh and ready for next mammoth challenge of your MBA. These things contribute to making IIM Shillong unique, but the more significant contribution is caused by the congruent goals of the facilitators and participants. Everyone in the campus is determined to contribute towards the North-eastern region and the society by promising leaders that are substantially packed with ethical values and sustainable practices.
Every IIM in the country is situated in very unique locations all across India, and deciding among any one of them, in particular, seemed like a tuff choice. I knew that every IIM in India has a very unique culture and has unique values and is something that they stand for.
Hello my name is Shubham Srivastava. I completed my Bachelors and Masters in the field of Materials Science and Technology from IIT BHU-Varanasi in the year 2015. I have 25 months of work experience in two startups of the country which are Peppertap and Ola Cabs. The idea for pursuing MBA came from my college day when I was associated in the placement committee and facilitated placements for my batch. This stint realised me that I have the managerial skills in me and I planned to move towards management role rather sticking to Materials Science which was a research-oriented branch. Post my college I joined a startup called Peppertap with an intent to learn and have a hands-on experience in management work. I got an immense learning there working with some best minds of the country, from there I moved to Ola Cabs working as Associate Program Manager. The stint I performed in Ola was challenging and also a fun for me and after working for around 25 months I realised that this is the right time to go back to academics and gain some more exposure of the business environment so I appear for CAT 2017 and scored a 99.33 percentile which fetched me an interview call from IIM shilling. My interview experience was very pleasant, where it began with describing Varanasi as I spent around 5 years of my life there then it moved to my work experience where my viewpoint on individual work and teamwork was asked and finally it ended with some technical questions. In May the interview results were out and I got admit from IIM Shillong. The reason for choosing IIM Shillong was the pace of this college since its foundation from 2008 it has come up to a level with other top B schools of the country in a span of only ten years and I could replicate the same with my corporate stint working in startups where pace of growth matters, so studying in this campus will give me immense opportunities to test my water and to contribute to the institute’s growth.
