Sometimes a few days are enough to establish a connection and sometimes a lifetime also falls short. I walked in the campus a few days back and it already feels like this is where I belong. The first thing that hits you when you enter IIMS, is the natural beauty around. It’s majestic, it’s uplifting and anyone is blessed to spend their 2 years in such an environment.
IIM Shillong, the campus in the clouds, the decision to choose this institute for my management studies was an easy one. The institute is known to be involved in the local social development programs and giving back to the society, which I found to be unique for a b school. I had never visited North east before and I was expecting to find a completely different and if I am to be blunt, alien life out here. I was wrong. We were welcomed amiably by our seniors, so much so that they were present to help us with the enormous luggage we had gotten with us for this life away from home. There were people from all over the country, and everyone seemed to be brought together by some common sense of purpose. A family away from home, I could see what that meant. The presumptions about b schools having huge competition, to each his own, the enormous workload, everything seemed irrelevant by the 3rd day on this campus. After almost a week, my roommate fell sick and she was bed ridden, I had to step out for some time, since I still had my classes to attend. When I came back two hours later, someone had gotten her food, medicines, and there was an extra blanket on top of her. She was so sick that when she woke up, she did not even know who had come into the room. People know each other for years and yet I cannot say that they would do so much for each other as they started within a week of being on this campus. The atmosphere and the pedagogy of the institute is simply impressive, and I have not felt like I am away from home yet.
IIM Shillong belonging to a group of elite and premier B-schools, is fast gaining national and international acclamations. Situated amidst nature, with the unique northeastern culture that characterizes it, inspires the student community to nurture new and innovative ideas and experiment with them, a valuable addition to the pedagogy of curriculum. The next distinctive feature is the diverse and the small batch size, roughly 180 students with 40% of the female students and students with an eclectic academic background like Engineering, Commerce, Pharma, Ocean and marine engineering, Biology, Food Technology etc. The diversity in classroom adds to the peer learning experience and class interactions, besides giving students a wider perspective and the small batch size ensures that the bonding within the campus becomes strong among the students. They become a close-knit family which stands together through thick and thin.
When we talk about the elite institutes of management education in India the three letters surely come to our mind I, I, & M and combining these letters we get ‘Indian Institute of Management’. This first thought itself shows the legacy of these institutes in providing one of the best quality of education and producing leaders in the industry. Every year lakhs of aspirants apply to IIM’s and there are only a few, who are lucky enough to get a chance of being a part of one of these institutes. I was also one of these aspirants and was lucky to get admission in Post Graduate Programme in Management in the 7th IIM of our country – IIM Shillong.
The beautiful city of Shillong is situated at an altitude of approximately 5000 feet above sea level and is the capital of one of the smallest states in India – ‘Meghalaya’. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of a top-class management institute in the country and that too situated at one of the most scenic places in India? IIM Shillong’s lush green campus with the State of Art facilities was established in 2007 and is situated at the Mayurbhanj Complex in the heart of the city of Shillong in the East Khasi Hills district.
It was almost 2 years back while sitting in my office cubical and introspecting about life and family, I realized that something was not going right. From time to time we hear that do what you love and you will enjoy your life to the fullest and certainly I was not loving what I used to do. Business was something that I was fascinated about right from my childhood. Seeing my uncle in the field of business from childhood gave the initial spark of being entrepreneurship but it was lost with time. The bug of business again bit me when I was in final year of my college and I was introduced to field of Blogging. I tried quite a few things which included SEO, SEM and Affiliate Marketing but failed miserably, at the same time I got a job in a major IT company in India and decided to join it. As I was thinking about my past, Idea of doing MBA stuck me. And why not!! A formal education of Business should have been the target for me right from the beginning. It’s said that it is Never Too Late and very next day I started preparing for the exams. Fast-forward a year here I’m at IIFT writing this blog of mine.
I had been staring at my office desktop for almost an hour now and each notification had given me countless minor heart attacks. At last when I was about to leave for home, IIFT homepage refreshes and the result notification pops up. With shivering hands, I opened the tab and to my delight, YES I had made it to IIFT.
A tiring train journey could do little to dampen my spirits, with a trolley bag in my hand and a guitar on my back, I was rushing through the crowd, trying to make my way out of the Howrah Junction, to the nearest taxi stand. The zeal, though, was short lived. Kolkata rains had caught me off guard, and the traffic played the perfect accomplice. I had to run from pillars to post to find a shelter for myself where I could wait for my cab, which was a mile and an hour away. Finally, the cab arrived and the driver, after an hour of cursing the traffic and the taxi company he worked for, dropped me outside the IIFT hostel. After a few formalities, I slogged to my room and could barely open my sleep deprived eyes.
