When I first arrived at IIFT Kolkata Campus, I was super excited. An MBA graduate from one of the best B-school in India was all I aspire to be. It was 24th Jun and my dad was accompanying me to college from Mumbai. It was raining moderately. As I finished with my hostel registration, I was directly allocated with the room. After settling luggage in the room, I went to meet my dad who was waiting at Guest room and we planned to explore campus. My dad loved the campus.
It was 22nd of May, 2018 when I got to know that I will be joining one of the best B-schools in the country, especially the one that is known for its niche field of International Trade. Indian Institute of Foreign Trade was established in the city of joy Kolkata, known for its grand colonial architectures and art galleries in 2006 and it has a pedigree that can be matched by only a few institutions in the country. In a period of less than a month, I was on my way to Kolkata with a heavy baggage of mixed emotions and memories from my birthplace of Nagpur.
Hello everyone, I am Hargun Singh from the batch of IIFT 2018-20. I hail from Bhatinda, Punjab and I was the first one to reach the campus and get my room allotted, which already set me apart from my batchmates. The first thing I noticed was the huge curved wall that stood like a mountain and my excitement was already very high. Also, as I am an expert swimmer, I was further made happy by the presence of the central lake in the campus, setting me in the right mind-frame. Along the lake was the lush green grass which added to my excitement. The campus itself is very picturesque with artistically designed buildings and well‐maintained plush gardens and water bodies.
Landed in the city of joy, Kolkata mixed feelings all over mind, along with dreams and goals that every aspirant carries with him. The red building of dreams, IIFT Kolkata welcomed us to the new exciting journey which lays ahead of us. In no time we got accustomed to the new culture at IIFT. Soon began the never-ending list of assignment along with guest lectures and the regular classes. Occupied for more than 3/4th of the day, still there were no complains. Slowly and steadily, we all became an integral part of the IIFT family, helping out each other acting as support system for one another. And then came the first event on campus i.e “Campus Safari”, asking new batch to come up with an innovative solution for making life better at IIFT and pitching the idea to final year students. Groups were formed and people started brainstorming to come up with the best solution. Never realized when the clock clicked 6.00 am, as the groups were busy designing logo, FB page, Instagram account and video for pitching. The Wow moment came when we won the runner’s up prize for our idea and demo application made. Finally all the efforts had paid off and also for the first time successfully pitched the idea. At IIFT, I found that there is space for everyone to explore. Teams have pull all-nighter for corporate competition taking forward the legacy of brand IIFT, Quiz for quizzing enthusiast people, clubs for all different areas. You will find people in library crunching data at Bloomberg terminal or at lounge to discuss assignments or playing football, volleyball or just walking around the lake. Literary and debate club to discuss happenings around the world. It is just three weeks and I realize there is so much to gain emphasising the fact that sleep is only variable we have. I can already see a visible change in my personality. No doubt, IIFT offers you world-class academic infrastructure and strong corporate relations for professional growth, but also these small yet significant achievements will help you grow overall. I am sure two years later, IIFT will not just provide me a degree in International Business but also a bag full of memories.
My journey towards an MBA career started in the summer of 2016, when I decided to give the MBA examinations for the year. I had a background in Analytics and was interested in learning about how companies operate and make business strategies and marketing plans. Since I had limited visibility towards the business decisions made by the client, I wanted to learn how to frame such strategy and be in a position to influence such decisions.
I have spent 15 days in one of the top B schools in our country. For the past 2 years I have spent a substantial amount of my times imagining being part of a top B school and framed my own preconceived notions. Thanks to Bollywood I knew that I could find my future life partner in here. It was the early morning or to say the midnight of 25th June I reached Kolkata, famously known as the “City of Joy”. I took the famous Taxi, which Kolkata is known for, to chowbaga road a place where I’m going to spend the rest of my two years in what could be my final stint of being a student. The campus is located at a quiet place surrounded by greeneries, really tough to get such a calm and majestic campus in a buzzing metropolitan. I could see a lot of exuberant faces with eyes filled with passion and curiosity. The initial pleasantries were exchanged and the orientation program was completed and my first few hours on the campus didn’t give a sign of what was supposed to come. It was the calm before the storm.
The Journey started back in December 2017 when I appeared for IIFT entrance exam. This year’s exam was full of surprises with an increase in the number of sections and different cut offs for each section. But somehow, I managed to get a call from one of top 10 B-School of the country and after the interview and other selection procedure I got an admission offer from IIFT Kolkata and I decided to be a part of this great institution.
There are three days of my life that I will always remember. The first, was way back in 1997 when a little boy, very afraid of the world that was waiting for him, entered into the huge iron gates of his school. The second one was back in 2010 when I stepped into college, grown up and more experienced than the day in 1997 but still afraid of the world. And the third was 24th June, 2018 when I finally stepped in the Kolkata campus of Indian Institute of Foreign Trade to fulfil a dream I had seen long ago, fear still a part of his primary emotions.
