A Mesmerising Sight - IIFT

1st July 2018 was the day when I first arrived at the campus and was instantly mesmerized by the beauty of the water bodies in and around the campus. Since the campus is located near the Kolkata wetlands, the campus is built in such a way that it does not hamper the ecological balance in the area. Another thing that really stands out at IIFT Kolkata Campus is the presence of a huge painting right at the front gate. There is a perfect synergy between the painting and the domain in which the institute specializes. The painting depicts various forms of Trade right from the barter system to the modern day trade. The campus truly blends state of art architecture with sustainability.

Uniqueness At IIFT

Just 2 weeks in the campus, and I already wonder why it took me 22 years to get to this place.  From entering the campus on the 1st day to sleepless nights in the hostel, I have experienced it all here. Being one of the top b-schools, I was aware the schedule will be very rigorous and hectic for each one of us. However, the intensity and uniqueness turned out to be even higher than anticipated. Never even in my dreams had I thought it will be such a breath-taking and life-changing experience. Doing group assignments in the corridor of the hostel in almost no time, eating food with someone who I have never met before are some of the unique stuff I did. Credit goes to the seniors and program director.

As soon as one thinks of a b-school, the mind is flooded with images of books, laptops and highly competitive students, all willing to excel. Nobody really associates fashion with a B school. That stigma was broken for me when I came to IIFT. Given the busy schedule we have here at IIFT, nobody spends hours picking out his or her outfits, but IIFT has its own style statement, which is unique and somewhat humorous.

The New Normal - IIFT

Finally the day was here when I was about to start my life in the way that I have been thinking for the past few years. The Monday, 25th of June arrived much sooner than I expected and all of sudden I was surrounded by a lot of strangers. All were on time as was communicated and were sitting in the classroom looking at each other’s faces and were trying to search for people from same cities, or at least from the same states. I was sitting at the very last seat, was looking for a familiar face in the crowd, and was delighted to find some people from the day of Interviews. After the document submission was over, there was Guest Lecture by Mr. Rajeev Dubey who is the President (HR, After-Market and Corporate Services) at Mahindra and Mahindra.

Unlocked And Loaded! - IIFT

From the outside, Shani Shingnapur, a small village in Maharashtra, looks exactly like any other village in the country. However, on closer inspection, it defies societal logic every single day. Home to nearly 4000 people, this village is unlike any other as all the houses here have no doors or locks. This is primarily due to faith in the Hindu deity Lord Shani who is believed to be a watchful protector of the village. IIFTians follow a similar practice of not locking doors of hostel rooms. Although this practice can be explained with the same rationale of faith, there are a few other forces at play.
