Getting into one of the top B schools of India created a frisson of excitement. My college was established in 1963 which itself builds a lot more pressure about LEGACY which the new batch has to maintain and carry on. The journey for this had started a year back with an intention to get into any decent b school, clueless about the destiny. Even though established just two years later of IIM A, IIFT is unable to gain recognition among general people, which I witnessed at a metro station Hauz Khas (Delhi). I asked an auto driver to drop me at IIFT but he replied me that he only knew IIT and not IIFT, which made me a little angry and sad at the same time, but, when I was travelling beside a professional corporate, he congratulated me on getting admission to the IIFT and that was the moment I realized that it depends on the perspective and knowledge of the person with whom we are talking. So, on reaching the campus to get admission into the course, all my queries got solved, just by seeing my seniors for the first time on the campus and by interacting with them. They became my motivators, someone to be looked upon for inspiration. During the interactive sessions with our seniors, there was a moment when the entire new batch, standing in front of them, began shouting these words out loud in unison…

What Is Not IIFT!

A beautiful campus spread over an illustrious green canvas stretching for miles and miles and miles! Large and small birds chirping around as the sun rises over the horizon is a common sight on the campus. Huge buildings on the campus start to act as like beacons to the people living on the clouds.  The air is always sizzling with the cheers of the crowd, nervousness of the players, passionate rumbling of the supporters on the playground. Swimming pool is never empty for students always find it as a source of best relaxation. KFC, McD, Burger King, Dominos, Pizza hut surrounding the campus like a garland are a common sight while entering or exiting. Hostels on the campus are fitted with all modern facilities that would even put five star hotels to shame. This campus sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?  But it is not the actual IIFT!!

What Does IIFT Dream Of?

Dreams are one of the most curious fascinations of the human creature. People seldom remember what they dreamt yesterday or the day before or the day before that. The dream could have been anything. It could have been a scary dream, a happy dream or a sad dream. Whatever the content of the dreams maybe, the dreams are a perfect representation of our minds, of our hearts. They give us an insight of who we are as a person, how we interact, what are our passions and dislikes. Every person who gives the IIFT exam will have, at some point in their life, dreams about IIFT. They would have dreamed about studying at IIFT, acing classes, representing IIFT at various levels, winning at those levels and so many more of such perfect dreams that one is prone to have. As Anna Freud has said “In our dreams we can have our eggs cooked exactly how we want them, but we can’t eat them.” Most of those test takers’ dream does not come to fruition. But for whom it does, the dream is worth the effort.

Uniqueness is something which sets you apart from the crowd, that’s what has remained the legacy of IIFT-“Indian Institute of Foreign Trade”. The name itself is unique in the B-school world, the only institution in India that provides you with an MBA degree in International business. Distinguished and prominent names in the Industry are the product of this very institution. The campus itself is a crazy place to be in, starting from the entrance, leading to the wings of wisdom: - the iconic statue, which will drive your journey towards the “top of the world “just above the statue. Space is small but organized in such a manner that it hosts a wide range of events from conclaves to cultural fest within that, which exhibits the uniqueness of the people with a gist of craziness when they organize and enjoy the parties.

The IIFT Evolution

“Be still when you have nothing to say; when genuine passion moves you, say what you’ve got to say and say it hot.” I didn’t think much about this quote from D. H. Lawrence until I was compelled to, which was when I started at IIFT Delhi. A student’s life at IIFT begins with the ‘PDP’, a week long personality development program run by the senior batch. I don’t think I’ll do justice to PDP by even trying to describe it but what is important for the reader to know about PDP is that it takes away your ability to sleep, literally.  This was a fact some of us learnt the hard way, especially one of my batch mates who we’ve come to know as ‘Hypnos’. Prior to joining IIFT, Hypnos was a sales executive who had perfected the art of power-naps while moving between multiple clients. Little to his knowledge, this habit would prove to be a very costly one in the coming days.

A Unique Relationship - IIFT

Having spent 2 weeks here at Indian Institute of Foreign trade, Delhi campus, after joining the MBA in International Business program, I still find it difficult to quantify the good and the bad here. A lot depends on the attitude you bring to the college. Appreciate the resources, and you’ll be rewarded. Work ethic is the greatest asset you can bring through the doors of the IIFT. Bring that, and the college will take care of the rest for you.
