Meet My New Friend At IIFT

Meet My New Friend At IIFT

A couple of weeks ago, I found myself in a new campus, a completely new environment and a new city. I was brimming with enthusiasm, eager to start a new chapter of my life. The language was new to me and the people- strangers. When we assembled for the inaugural lecture, the auditorium was filled with about 200 people, they had the same look on their faces as I did - one of eagerness. We were a bunch of seeds waiting to be watered and nurtured. I can remember the role call vividly. “55B” I call out and then I hear loud voice “56 B”. I still remember craning my neck to locate the person with that voice. It was a girl from the neighbouring country, bold and beautiful and her name – Vedanshi Kethan. Every day I saw a different face of her. I did not realize her energy levels until the treasure hunt began and she cracked each clue quickly and moved around swiftly making me wonder whether she was human. This made me feel like a middle-aged lady although what I was perfectly normal and she was the abnormal one.

IIFT – Crafting Wings Of Metal, Poised To Fly

Joining a business school marked the beginning of a new phase in my life. Admission into a school as prestigious as the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Delhi appeared like the culmination of the gruelling entrance exam and an exhaustive Written Ability Test, Group Discussion and Personal Interview process. The feeling of elation I had when I entered the campus as a student was a moment of pride. I walked through the campus and familiarised myself with the place which would be my new home for the next two years.

A Feeling That Cannot Be Described - IIFT

A Feeling That Cannot Be Described - IIFT

Doing an MBA from one of the top b-schools was an esteemed dream which did come true when I got admission into IIFT, Delhi after passing an elaborate written test, followed by exhaustive Group discussion and personal interview processes. Come the start of my new journey, I was greeted by the gruelling hot weather as soon as I landed in Delhi. Excited to view the campus for the first time, I boarded my Uber. Humming "badal pe paon hain" in my mind, I entered the campus and was greeted by The “Wings of Wisdom”. The man with feathers and a book on one hand and a pen on the other, has cemented itself as the perennial symbol of IIFT. He is the symbol of Knowledge which inspires us to scale new heights. He inspires us to propel the wings to our aspirations and ignite the flames of wisdom. The bricks on the floor leading to his feet have words and symbols of various languages inscribed in them, signifying the inclusion of knowledge sources from around the world. I stood there in awe for some time, contemplating my life in the coming two years. The 'Wings of Wisdom' stands at the center of a circular roof famously known as the The Top of the World. TOW is not a place, it's a feeling which cannot be described. It is the place to be, at night 3 ams, to enjoy the cool breeze flowing through your hair. It's the place where you can be high, on life. Broadening the perspective, it can be said that it provides us with a wider and global view of our b-school. After spending a couple of minutes in this lap of serenity, I headed towards the Old Hostel (OH). I was initially cribbing about the fact that I'll have to live with two complete strangers in the same room as I was unaware of upcoming some of the most amazing times ever. The campus of IIFT though small helps us connect more to our batchmates as well as seniors.

A Breath Of Fresh Air

A Breath Of Fresh Air

It was the month of June, the hottest day of the season. It started in silence and everything lay motionless. Not a leaf dared to rustle as if afraid of the wrath of the scorching sun. The birds and beasts were all gasping for breath and so was I. And enters Simran. Now, all I could think about when she entered our room was the DDLJ track playing in slow motion. But, Simran is nothing like the “Simran” from DDLJ. In fact, she is the “Geet” from Jab We Met. She is a breath of fresh air and is, of course, her own favourite. She is all for living vivaciously and never forgets her passion. Even before I knew her, I knew we would be good friends. Then I met my second roommate, Dhruti. We had a rocky start. Within a few minutes, we got into a heated argument. Some words were exchanged which we both didn’t mean. Of course, the conversation was about who would finally sit on the iron throne (GOT reference).  A true TV series fanatic, the force is always with her. She knows how to keep calm and handle stuff. She is the one and only dentist in our batch but doesn’t advise us to brush our teeth twice a day.

Favourite And Unforgettable Moments - IIFT

Favourite And Unforgettable Moments - IIFT

When I will go back to my home –town, I will be asked –What have been your favourite memories in IIFT so far? Usually, I will stammer and stutter; it’s just so hard to narrow my IIFT experience thus far into a compact series of easily definable moments. Yet, I have found that the favourite memories I have made here at IIFT have been, more often than not, ones that are otherwise somewhat normal. Here are some of my favourite, unforgettable moments and why they hold so much significance to me.

What I Learnt With 'U' - Vaibhav Makhija, IIM Udaipur

What I Learnt With 'U' - Vaibhav Makhija, IIM Udaipur

I have been brought up in hometown in Aurangabad, which is a small city in Maharashtra. So being from a small city throughout my journey till graduation, I used to be with the people of the same community, the same place, there was no cultural diversity. So when I got the offer from IIM, Udaipur, I was a bit worried about how I will survive, how I will cope up with people from different diversity, people from different educational background, people with work experience. But after coming to IIM Udaipur, during the first week, we had a session of creativity, team building, and design thinking. These sessions helped in breaking the ice between the students from different culture, educational background. These helped me to think outside of the box, how to work in a team, how to lead a team. Also as we know, today data is the most critical thing available with people and also there is a lot of data available, so there was one session during the team building sessions, which thought us to concentrate only on what is important to you and rest all is waste. So these sessions also helped me in concentrating on things which are important for me to build the career and which things are just obstacles to deviate me from my goal.

Little Breathers - Rohit Gathala, IIM Udaipur

On the first long weekend of the summer, when we had started to get dizzy from the workload, we thought it would be better for our mental health and of those around us to go for a road trip. And being in Udaipur we had plenty of options to choose from. Things tend to get a bit rowdy when the five of us take off like this, so we needed a place to supplement it. And thus began one of the great herculean labors of our times, searching for a hotel.
