Always expect the unexpected is what life teaches us daily. But no one can let go of his/ her expectation. I came to IIM Udaipur with a lot of expectations and Yes! I can see that this path can help me to fulfill them. But these are happening in a pretty different way. I came to learn about management but the way, I am learning is unexpected. Before coming here, I knew that assignments and deadlines would be there. But I never thought that one particular thing will happen.
It was one of my favorite lectures of Managerial Oral Communication (MOC) during the first week of my MBA course. Mr. Guptan, our instructor, was looking as sharp as he always did. All the students were excited about the planned activity for that day. For the activity, the students had to narrate a story with a moral, to the class within a time limit of three minutes. The narration was followed by feedback from the peers. Everyone was quite excited and anxious at the same time.
IIM Udaipur campus is located in one of the most beautiful cities of Rajasthan. We know that Rajasthan is famous for its unique forts, buildings, and culture, and it is also a fact that the people of Rajasthan are very proud of their culture and follow it by their heart. Located at such a place, IIM U has all these properties. The campus of IIM U (even though not completed) is very unique. The hostels here are made of stones, which is unique in its own kind and matches with the background of the place. The names of hostels here are: Mehrangarh, Jaisalmer, Kumbhalgarh, Chittorgarh, Amer, and Ranthambore almost covering all the unique forts of Rajasthan. When I first get to know these names, I feel like living in a battle field. Like Rajasthani people, we the people of IIM U also fell proud of our culture and follow it with full dedication.
Hey fellas…!! I am a Dream. I was born, neither within the darkness of the night, nor the comforts of sleep, but was forged bit-by-bit over a long time. Sacrifices were made, sleep compromised and a lot of hard work put in. But with increasing effort, my importance has been increasing proportionally. My significance has been changing for my bearer over time – initially, at my inception, I was about clearing a few entrance exams, then modified to be about clearing a few interviews and then finally, making it to one of the top B-school of the country. I thought my work was done when my bearer was offered admission in MDI Gurgaon, one of country’s finest management institutes. But never have I been more wrong in my life. I was about to bid adieu to the world, leaving behind a feeling of contentment, when I was summoned back to life. This time it wasn’t about a test to ace or an interview to clear, but something much more comprehensive and much more tiresome. While joining the college, my bearer was introduced to a plethora of new experiences eliciting emotions and feelings, previously unchartered, during the 21 years of stay among family confined within the comforts of home. The place was new, so were the people, and the daunting task of replacing the tenderness of home with the rigidity of Hostel was upon him. To be honest (being a dream, a superfluous entity, I am not allowed to lie) it wasn’t easy. The initial days stretched long into the nights to the point where the thought of quitting didn’t really seem the worse of ideas. Sleep was a luxury, too costly to afford, so people tried to steal some during the Guest Sessions (a big mistake, by the way). The sudden change of routine from ‘Nothing to do’ to ‘So much to do’, that too with a time-constraint hanging over the head, left the students gasping for a moment of relief, but none to be heeded. The concerns started rising about the sustainability of such a rigorous schedule and the ability to keep up with it. That is when we, me and my bearer, found a new meaning to our lives. My bearer understood that being a part of a B-School, that too one of the best in the country for that matter, came with a few requisites of its own. You need to be on your toes at all times, ready to sprint at the shot of a gun, but provided with the promise of teaching you to run at unimaginable speeds that you yourself might not believe you to be capable of. The journey has started.
B-School life is one extra-ordinary experience. I look back to the day I entered here and today that it has been a month, nothing is like it used to be. I was a person who preferred a small closed circle of friends and since I have come here I never had my meals with same person more than thrice. I have been involved in activities I never thought of being a part of. I have started planning things out as it is not possible to keep a track otherwise. There is so much to do and there is so much learn, so many to learn from. This is a fast-paced life and one needs to get really good at prioritizing things. We didn’t care about it so much till we realized how missing out on some things can be very regrettable later. I was quite disorganized and I really didn’t like to have a checklist to follow. I was more of – take it as it comes to type of a person. But this place did this sorcery and I can feel the need to do this and see the benefits that follow. Here, I have realized my potential and stretched it wonderfully. I like running, it’s a hobby. We had a Marathon in the campus and a distance of about 6km was to be covered and I had never run this much at a stretch. I finished first among the girls and was in top 20 overall. There is something in the air, it makes you feel powerful. It has that energy.
It has been a month now since I joined MDI and honestly speaking, I do not know how that much time has gone by already. Before I kicked off my MBA journey, like many other aspirants who were excited to go back to college, I had read a lot about how life at MDI is supremely fast paced and I used to wonder how fast can it really get? I got the answer in the first week I spent here itself. It has been a wonderfully hectic one month till now. I say this because even though I have spent sleepless nights working on various projects and catching deadlines, it has been one of the best months of my life. I enjoy being busy, managing time like I never had to before, collaborating with friends to get things done and the hustle with which everyone keeps themselves going.
