The Batch of 2018-2020 at IIM Udaipur started their MBA Journey with full of energy and enthusiasm on the bright morning of June 25, 2018. Everyone was hoping a program full of new things, new learnings and with a goal of self-development to be able to enter the corporate world all prepared to make a mark on it. Each of us expected the learning curve to be increasing gradually, where we learn and improve every day. And one such among so many was me. But who knew I would get to see and understand, to some extent, what I could get out of my time here at Indian Institute of Management, Udaipur within the very first week.
Situated in a secluded land of Kundeshwari village, near Kashipur, IIM Kashipur is surrounded by farms from all side. We might be among few Management institutes how have guts to be operational far from corporates favorite destination and yet we have hundred percent placements. This points out to a very simple fact, that corporates have recognized IIM Kashipur and are willing to go an extra mile, just to recruit some phenomenal talents that we have here in IIM Kashipur.
IIM Kashipur is one of the first 13 IIMs. It was initially mentored by IIM Lucknow and that is why the courses and curriculum is one of the best of all. With its mission “To drive academic excellence using innovative teaching methods, promoting research and practice of sustainable leadership” and vision “To become, over the next 10 years, one of the top business schools in India developing leaders who can perform globally.” it is ready to set its root into the existing business curriculum.
The new state of the art, red-brick campus of IIM Kashipur, spread across 200 acres of area, is located in the foothills of Himalaya’s near one of India’s oldest National Parks, in the city of Kashipur in the Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand, India. IIM Kashipur commenced it's operating from July 2011 under the mentorship of IIM Lucknow. Since then, IIM Kashipur, also known as IIM in the North has come a long way ahead. It was the first among the new IIMs to move to its permanent campus. Being situated in the rural underdeveloped locality, IIM Kashipur is tasked with the responsibility of developing its surroundings apart from giving India its future top managers. Moreover, institutes proximity to one the most densely industrialized regions provides numerous opportunities for industry interaction and projects.
As I started with my 4 hour journey from New Delhi to Kashipur, quite a number of thoughts crossed my mind. Having been brought up in a metropolitan city, will I be able to adjust to the new place? How will be the campus life in a small town like Kashipur?
A memorable classroom experience in our B-school Since the time I came across the share market and its working, I had always wondered about what it exactly is. Why there are so many news channels discussing the prices of stocks and commodities? Why the headlines of pink news paper had results of the Singapore stock exchange along with last day Nifty and Sensex? How do people become rich and poor at the speck of an instant? Where do the insurance companies get money from so as to pay for the claim despite the premium being so less? With all these mindboggling questions in my mind, I stepped into IIM Kashipur. The first class of my MBA journey took off with a Shloka of Bhagwat Gita by Professor Ashish Kumar (Finance faculty). The class started with an animated video where we saw how a small business man slowly grew his business and was doing well. The man wanted to expand his business, so many people came to help him knowing that person was trustworthy and he would return them the money with certain interest or distribute profits in the proportion of their contribution to the company. For the first time in my life, I felt that my questions were getting answered and I was at the right place. After that class, there was no turning back. I started studying a lot about Finance which is why now the black letters of the pink news papers began making complete sense to me. With few successful equity research projects, trading and investing in equity markets, tracking various news and events I now really feel that I owe these to my first class at IIM Kashipur and my finance Professor who taught so well. A techie, having a 3years of work experience, now knows one more Language i.e. language of Finance.
It happened in one of the wintery mornings of IIM Kashipur. We have the best winters here. The foggy mornings, the chilly winds and the hot tea we get in the mess make it a memorable experience for us in the campus. We all had classes from 9 in the morning. After having a lavish breakfast, we went to the classes for the lectures. The first class of the day was of Corporate Finance. The classes are nearly one and a half hour long. Early after forty-five minutes in the class, we were working on MS Excel and Prof. X decided to take a round of the class to check whether the students were working or dozing off.
