Lean Operations - A Memorable Classroom Experience - IIM Kashipur

Lean Operations - A Memorable Classroom Experience - IIM Kashipur

Lean operations, this subject has fascinated me since lecture one. I have a special connection with this subject, maybe because of my mechanical background or maybe because we have one of the best lean faculties teaching us and bringing his vast industry experience to the classroom. It was during one of his lectures I realised that lean concept are as much applicable in one’s life as they are in the industry. I realised that by applying lean concepts in my personal life I can improve my academic performance and relationships with friends & family. Soon I started observing how I spend my time and what are the things I do that do not add value to my life whether personal or professional. After a week of observation, I did an analysis. The results were an eye-opener, I found that I spend most of my time on activities that do not add any sort of value to my life. Then I took it a step further and decided to use lean concepts to improve my performance. I decided not to spend much time on things that do not add value, for example, social networking, Netflix, gossip, etc. rather I started focussing more on pre-readings for the day, lectures and case studies which is surely enhancing my learning experience. A small change like reading about the topic before the lecture has brought a significant change in the process of learning. I find it easier to understand the lecture and able to relate to it just because of a small change of reading beforehand.  After learning the concept of KAIZEN I decided to bring small changes in my life like a daily walk after the dinner, reading at least three HBR articles in a week and waking up early. The changes I feel now is I feel healthier, I am nourishing my business acumen and I do not have to hurry for early classes as I have plenty of time. In addition, to measure the improvement in performance I set some parameters and one of my parameters is GPA, which went up from 6.43 to 7.86 just by applying these concepts.

In The Lap Of Mother Nature - IIM Kashipur - Rakshit Rana

IIM Kashipur is made unique mainly by its location and its infrastructure. The campus is located in the Terai region in the foothills of the Himalayas in the lap of mother nature. The place is the gateway to Nainital (also known as the Lake District of Uttarakhand) and Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve (First National Park in India). This, at times serves as a good escape from the hectic and rigorous curriculum of the PGP course. The campus is located away from the hullabaloo of city.  IIM Kashipur is the IIM of rural India. This is important because it should be a priority for an institution of national importance to observe the problems of rural India closely and provide innovative management solutions to the problems of the community at large. This is the very purpose the IIM’s were established in the first place, but the sad reality is that little has been done to address the problems that affects the masses. While Operations Management and Supply Chain Management is taught so deeply across top B-Schools to prepare the students for the Corporate World, little has been done and even lesser accomplished in the public domain. The Public Distribution Systems remain in shambles, thus defeating the purpose. The rural location of the institute will definitely in the long run provide an opportunity to work closely with the community stakeholders. One such initiative is the IIM Kashipur’s Parivartan club which undertakes activities like educating the poor rural children, blood donation drives, book distribution drives, etc. In future, deeper involvement can be expected. The institute is located close to the Automobile and FMCG manufacturing hub of Northern India (The Rudrapur Industrial belt). This provides an opportunity to have practical learning about the best practices followed by the industry giants like Ashok Leyland, Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, etc. This is especially important if we see it like this: After independence, the government of India had declared Industry as the Prime Moving Force (PMF) of the Economy and it is the Secondary sector that has the potential of stimulating maximum economic growth, as has been achieved in China. It is also in line with the Government of India’s “Make in India” initiative that the focus on Secondary sector be increased. It becomes all the more important from the recent happenings. It is the secondary sector that pushed India’s GDP growth to 7.2% in the recent quarter after the slump following demonetisation and GST implementation. The institution is well set for becoming one of the best in the country for Operations Management. This is facilitated by the presence of leading faculties of Operations Management in the institution. The faculties are central to the academic learning of the students. It is where IIM Kashipur is blessed with professors who have a deep understanding of the modern day industry practices. The professors themselves have acted as consultants to several industry giants. There is a huge amount of research work backing their knowledge.

The Indian Institute of Management Kashipur (IIM Kashipur) is located at the foothills of Himalayas in the state of Uttarakhand. Established in 2011, IIM Kashipur was one of the first IIMs among its peers to move to a permanent campus spread over 200 acres. The institute is blessed with natural beauty of Jim Corbett and Nainital as well as with the proximity to the Kashipur-Rudrapur industrial belt. This uniquely positions IIM Kashipur to provide a holistic educational experience to its students rooted in the philosophy of “learning by doing”. Many of our professors also work in the capacity of consultants to the companies in the area which allows them to provide live examples of challenges faced by the industry and the possible solutions enabled by cutting‑edge research.

The sprawling new campus of IIM Kashipur is located in the lush green neighborhood of Kundeshwari in Kashipur. The campus, still under construction, will boast of two lakes and a biodiversity park among other amenities. IIM Kashipur is the only IIM to be located at a trisection of industrial, rural and natural outlook towards the world. This is what makes the campus unique. The campus incorporates this fact beautifully in itself. The founding principles of IIM Kashipur include ‘Sustainable Development’.
