Dr. Arunachalam Muruganantham, social entrepreneur, innovator and the leader who brought to the public eye the issues related to unhygienic practices around menstruation in rural India was at the SPJIMR campus on Friday (Sep.16) as part of Heroes speak 2016.
A summer morning soaked in the humidity of Mumbai and I was travelling in an auto-rickshaw to reach for my interview, submerged in my imaginations about the place. Lost in my thoughts I imagined how huge the college building might be, drawing in from the structures that I saw around. “Madam, you’ve reached”, bellowed the driver and I was still struggling to find the name of the college hidden somewhere in the lush green verdant. And there I was struck by the idiosyncrasy of the place.
What is an MBA? A route to a job? A brahminical discipline taught only to the most deserving? A license to be a cowboy in the corporate world? An entry ticket to the upper middle class life?
A single moment is enough to break your life-long perception about certain things. Whenever there is a steep ramp in the career, it takes some time and a level of understanding to move from one stage to the other. When this is lacking, life makes us take new things with a pinch of salt. We have no option but to face it! When you have two prized days of a weekend between the last day of work and the first day of a new journey at SPJIMR, after which life would change drastically beyond imagination, it is hard to figure things out. Imagine the state of wilderness on missing the game of thrones episodes on a Monday morning. Such was the level of my maturity when I stepped into the institution called SPJIMR.
It has been a whirlwind of a first season, from July 2015 to June 2016. Summer placements, the screwed up academic schedules, SAC elections, section wars, sports trips, never ending parties, student exchange, summer internship finally and of course personal problems. The first year of B-school has shown me so many ups and downs that it is needless to say I have seen more than a few changes in me. Okay, make that five. I am sure you will relate to one or more points as mentioned below. It is by no means an exhaustive list but it definitely encompasses the finer points.
Life at a B-school teaches us a lot of things - time management, multi-tasking, paraphrasing, and the one thing we are most adept at is, presentations. A B-school graduate is capable of dishing out a presentation with his eyes closed and hands behind his back. All this, to get us up to speed to the corporate world post our b-school journey. But to what extent does it makes us wary of the troubles plaguing our society? Will we all end up becoming straight up white collars, with hedonic career goals and oblivious to the under-privileged populace amongst us?
Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SIBM) Bengaluru saw an evening where history was repeated all over again. An evening where alumni from all 7 batches came back to college to relive those precious memories which they painted the college walls with. It was the 6th edition of Samaagam, the Annual Alumni Meet, which was held this Saturday, 10th of September 2016. The theme for this year’s Samaagam was ‘Rewind, Relive’ and over 160 alumni took time out of their busy schedules to visit their Alma Mater – SIBM Bengaluru.
