Enthusiasm, zeal, hopes, ambitions resonate high in the spirits of the new batch of IME department, IIT Kanpur, which is en route a new journey. A new journey brings along with it a set of new experiences. And the journey at IIT Kanpur has been no different.
A bag pack, a white shirt, black trousers, a tie and a conscience full of expectations; that’s how I walked into the ‘Pre-Joining Meet’ at ‘Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies’ on my first day. Ever since the first moment of the meeting, I was assured that this college is all about tradition and protocol. ‘Discipline’ is more valuable than an ‘oasis in the desert’ and ‘tradition’ is guarded like ‘The Holy Grail’. It is this fierce nurturing of values that sets apart Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies. When it comes to tradition, JBIMS is second to none! And rightly so; when you have 51 years of legacy prodding you, ‘Tradition’ is the least you can expect.
Imagine a traveler advancing on a thorny path determined to reach his goal. It is a journey that he undertakes undeterred by the fear of obstacles and unmindful of the distractions that lure him towards diverging from his course. It is a lot of inspiration and even more perspiration, it is the outright refusal of accepting the ‘obvious’ and the indomitable spirit of diligence and perseverance that keeps our traveler advancing towards this goal. But when he finally reaches this unchartered frontier, his thoughts are clouded by feelings of nostalgia. He fondly remembers the days that began at dawn and ended long after dusk, the tiring noons and the sleepless nights, the anxiety and excitement that he felt every day when he treaded forward in his quest. It is then he realizes that it is not the destination but the path that he enjoyed, that success was not a one time achievement but a constant advancement towards something better. And thus, he resumes his journey with renewed vigor and inspiration striving to achieve something better, something bigger.
The night of 14th July, 2016 brought a precursor to the many subsequent feelings of belongingness. An intimation from one of the seniors is all it took for the MMS batch of 2016-18 to up their antennas and start preparing themselves for the aspirational journey they had been waiting for all along. Speculations began flying around all us newbies about the nature, intensity and purpose of the induction program which was long under anticipation. Our exuberance was at its peak, and conscious efforts were being made to avoid faltering on our first interaction with the institute.

Arcturus 2016 was organized by the Corporate Interface Team, one of the nine student councils of SIBM Pune and was held on August 21, 2016 in the Lavale campus of Symbiosis International University.
It was a thirty two hour long journey that got me all the way from Kolkata, West Bengal to IIM Kashipur, Uttarakhand. And there was nothing but joy in my mind ever since the day I had got my final call. Coincidentally, I had received my call while I was in a train that was bringing me back from Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College, West Bengal to Kolkata, West Bengal. And the very moment of joy kept on flashing through my mind all the way from Kolkata to Kashipur!
It’s always said and often widely accepted that, when you are recollecting an incident, you aren’t actually recalling that incident, but are recalling the last time you thought of that incident. So yes, what I am essentially trying to do here is to take you through a wonderful journey of mine, something which I hope to relive, as I take you along on this journey.
