Twenty kilometres from the heart of the beautiful city Udaipur lies the fast-growing (both literally and symbolically) IIM Udaipur. Located in Balicha, it may not appear as a top b-school in the first impression. But when you move further and see what lies at the nerve centre of this college, you will find that this place is full of life and stories to tell.
You know the feeling when you get to a city that is a tourist city, where every shop, every store sells the same handicrafts stuff to attract the tourist. The colourful façades, the over-hanging paraphernalia, overstocked with souvenirs shouting at the top of their lungs to woo the customers over and haggling over the prices, and a calm settles over you because that is when it hits you that yes the vacation has finally started. No matter how dinghy and narrow the streets are, no matter how navigation seems to require the skills of Magellan to cross the intricate networks of the city, it always seems to settle as a detached calm over you. And here welcomes the Institute of your dreams.
One comes to an IIM with the aim to fulfil their dreams and be the manager they always dreamed of becoming. An IIM is famous for their demanding schedules, academic rigour and the plethora of opportunities provided to the students. Indian Institute of Management Sirmaur is no different. Being a baby IIM, IIM Sirmaur has not yet flourished nevertheless this provides the students with the chance to pave the way for the future of this institute. Being a new IIM, we have a limited number of faculties on the campus and are visited by many extraordinary minds from various management institutes to teach us. Among all the interesting classes we had, the most memorable classroom experience I have had was a quiz I gave in my third term of the 1st year.
Although there were many classroom experiences which were worthy to be remembered, I would like to spell out one memorable experience encountered by me in our b-school.
It must not be a novel concept to anyone appearing for any of the aptitude tests that one of the most frequently asked questions in any interview is ‘Why MBA?’ Most of us find it really difficult to articulate their views on this question. I was not an exception when I appeared for the interviews after CAT. The life of an IT individual was probably not suitable enough for me, that I took this decision of pursuing further studies. But many times, I could not even convince myself with this answer.
“A thousand words full of worth; Time spent appreciating earth, Clouds, sunshine, or even on a rainy day; My admiration for you will never go astray, Academics are important but never forget to live life, It’s easy to feel lost; But now I can say that I am found.”
The summer of every year, hundreds of new students arrive at the campus with a bag full of dreams and ambition. I am one among those hundreds, staring at the gate of the 30-year-old institute. Standing calmly in the heart of Bhubaneswar amidst all the hustle, grand in its own sense. So what is unique about this? Let us look deeper into XIMB!
What is unique? According to the Oxford dictionary unique means being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else. So, is my campus unique? Let’s find out based on my now 12-month long relationship with this place, IIM Udaipur. The only place other than my home where I have lived for more than two months. Yes! I was going to live in a hostel for the first time. My school was four kilometres from my home, my engineering college six kilometres and my office forty kilometres away from my house. Although this was not intentional and I intended to move to another place for doing my engineering, but life has other plans. Nevertheless, I wished to gain exposure to living in another city away from home and experience that part of life also. Finally, after joining IIM-Udaipur, I was getting that chance. So, IIM-Udaipur was going to be my home for the next 21 months.
