A Struggle to remember and a lesson learnt, Lakshmi Varsha M, XIMB
I still remember the day of the parent teacher meet held at my school almost 12 years ago. I was praised by every teacher of my class for the admirable marks I achieved. The years before that present a different story and the challenges I faced during that phase made me who I am today. I was a victim of bullying from a very young age and my small, fragile frame did not help my case. Bullying affects an individual at countless aspects. It rips apart your confidence and handicaps your social skills. I stumbled across every path I took and thought twice before interacting with any of my classmates. I was also not on par with my classmates with regards to classes and marks. I built walls around yourself which were difficult to break. Fortunately, I am one of the few kids whose parents didn’t turn a deaf ear to such problems. My mother and brother, both, helped me learn to stand up for myself and raise my voice. I slowly broke out of my personal bubble and started working for myself. The changes happened at a minuscule pace, but I kept on going. That year, I made a speech in my class and was awarded the second prize; such small victories were a huge boost to my damaged confidence. A day, a normal one for everybody else but, not for me was when I got to see my end term results. My marks sky rocketed compared to my previous year’s results. I was on cloud nine but, in retrospect, if I rightly remember, the happiest person was my mother. That day was the day when I completely broke free of my inhibitions. From that day on, I never looked back even when I failed at a task. I knew and I know now that I will be able to do it with a little more effort, a little more patience and there is nobody to stop me but Myself. I built my confidence on these grounds and realized the meaning behind the phrase “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent” quoted by Eleanor Roosevelt. I overcame many other challenges and achieved my ambitions with this attitude and will continue do so in future.
