Whenever I remember that day of my engineering when I was reading an autobiography of Ghanshyam Das Birla, I still feel goosebumps. He spent his childhood in poverty. He studied only till class fifth and lived with his brother. One day his brother asked why their luck is really bad, why God is not favouring them, They work hard even then also there is no sign of success. Then he told his brother to have faith in hands, these are the only things through which any person can step up the ladder of success. Respect these hands and never ever do any wrong from these hands. And from this thought he created history. He planned to start his Jute business with less money, the British government has rejected this. He applied for loan and land for his factory, this also got rejected. Through his self-belief, he never gave up and succeeded to build 200 companies, various temples, educational institutions, trusts, and hospitals. His inspirational autobiography has given me the direction and confidence to chase my dream.

While writing about the mighty Aditya Birla Group, the first question that comes to my mind is “Where do I start?”. I will start with a product that came into the market just a month after my birth, Idea cellular. I have no Idea why it took me 16 years to get my hands on this amazing network. And the fact that it helped me through my graduation in both gaining knowledge via the world wide web and maintain good connectivity with friends and family thanks to its stable network.

When I think of Aditya Birla Group, the first thing that comes to my mind is the ad of Abhishek Bachhan saying “What an Idea Sir Ji!”. Truly what an Idea Sir Ji i.e. the Idea Cellular Ltd. I remember the days of the year 2003 when I was studying in my village. This was the first time when I came to know that there is one device that is wireless and lets people talk to each other over a long distance, unlike the traditional wired telephone. Those were the days when the Indian government had deregulated the telecom sector and therefore there was a sudden upsurge of the mobile phone market. Idea was the first company which installed its tower in my village and it made a huge difference in our life. Now we could connect with our relatives and other friends with a small device in our pocket over a cellular network powered by the Idea. This was some kind of the blessing we got during those days as connectivity with other parts of the country was a big issue especially in small villages like mine. After that, it opened a whole lot of new world. Then came the WAP/GPRS services through which we were able to connect with the parts of the world which transformed our life and propelled us into the present era of a digital revolution.

I woke up in the morning and had a talk with my parents over mobile. My father was speaking of our new house that was being constructed and he was looking after options for durable flooring. I was suggesting him to take up an Insurance policy as he is a frequent traveler. After the call, I was reading the newspaper with an article on plastic pollution explaining how Jute is now being used as the best natural alternative to plastic and its advantages. I needed to go out to shop apparel in my friend’s car and he was boasting of his Jute felt-based car interiors.

“Why Aditya Birla Group is Big in my life?”

#IIMTRICHY ABG and its unsung presence in my lifeI faintly remember my lunch box packed by mom but I can strongly recollect her tradition of wrapping the food in aluminium foils. This is one of my first acquaintance with the Aditya Birla Group I can recollect in the form of Hindalco aluminium foils . Needless to say the products and brands of the ABG have had an eminent and unsung presence till now in my life. When I stumbled upon this opportunity , I began doing some research about the brands and subsidiaries and realized an eerie connection . The first SIM I had on my name was from Idea which surely paved way for many opurtunities. Also, the first pair of boots and apparel I purchased with my first earnings were from Pantaloons. And the first blazer I got for myself for attending the b-school interviews was from Allen Solley. These will always remain special for the very right reasons. And now I realize that ABG’s presence has been very much significant in the journey of me becoming an independent women. This is how I can uniquely relate myself to the conglomerate. Over the years from its inception it has surely spread its tentacles in very diverse sectors and is continuing to influence many lives like mine.When we hear the word ‘Aditya Birla’ , we surely do get a sense of national pride and the manner in which the stalwart has contributed to the economic development of the country is something which cannot be sidelined. #IIMTRICHY – HOW I CHALLENGED THE CHALLENGES Living the life of my dreams ,come what may has always been my desire. I have faced many challenges so far in my life and I learnt a lot from each one of them .However there are some of them which have enhanced my personality drastically and contributed largely to my development as an individual. Each experience has contributed directly or indirectly in shaping my personality.One of these is being selected as the school captain in 10th standard. Owing to the responsibilities bestowed upon me ,I learnt the true essence of leadership. It helped me in developing constructive and out of the box approach in tackling with situations. I developed good listening skills and it thought me to how to keep myself composed in difficult circumstances . I learnt the niche of convincing others with my viewpoints and creative methodologies. When I moved to hostel for the first time in class 11, which was a completely new environment for me, I realized and learnt the thin line of difference between adjustment and compromise.While pursuing my second year of graduation , I got selected into two eminent clubs of my college which I was very fascinated about. These new roles demanded a lot of time and energy from me. As a result of which the grades went low drastically and I got depressed and eventually my health started deteriorating .At that point of time I realized that I should not give up and continue striving . I worked out a plan for myself which helped me in managing time for extra-curriculars, academics and my health. My perseverance and positive approach gave yielding results in the subsequent years and I was successful in maintaining my grades . The most crucial learning which I acquired from this is that one should never give up and get demoralized .Self confidence and hard work are the keys to overcome any situation. It is truly said that life is an adventure. But one has to keep moving forward come what may. That is what I have experienced in recent times. Just a month due for CAT exam I came face to face with a harsh reality of my life. Due to some unforeseen circumstances my family had to face a grave misfortune. I couldn’t digest the fact and completely broke down. As the days passed by, I gathered courage and made up my mind that I should be the one taking sole control over my life ,not anyone else. From there onwards though it was difficult I did not lose focus on my goal and here I am at IIM Trichy and I am really proud of what I have achieved. I can deeply resonate with these lines “Magic happens when you don’t give up even though u want to. The universe always falls in love with a stubborn heart.”

More often than not, we don’t realise to what extent a firm or a group of firms affect our life. When we put ourselves to think for a minute, we can see how the world keeps changing and how those firms are making it happen. Aditya Birla Group is one of those big names which have impacted our life in some way or the other. The ABG started its journey as a cotton trading company in Pilani, Rajasthan in 1857. Today, it is a multinational conglomerate with 38 companies in 14 different industries, employing 1,20,000 people in 34 countries.
