There have been products that I have used in different walks of my life that fall under the ABG umbrella. From fashion to telecom to agribusiness it has expanded in all horizons. So going down the lane, back in school days we desperately used to wait for recess to have the delicacies from everyone’s tiffin. One thing that was common was the aluminum foil from “Freshwrapp” that was used to pack the food with the promise of keeping the food fresh and tasty and it did indeed. Keeping the taste intact to “maa k hath ka khana”, Freshwrapp is one of those common things that is found in most of the households. It might be a small product but brings back some homely memories. Fast forward some years, college days were the time to connect, meet, make new friends and “cell” had actually begun to be the most important unit in our lives. Students checking different schemes and offers for different telecom operators and yes there were many with ‘idea’ and I was one of them and now a Vodafone user. No doubt all these years I have been connecting with people and I know the future is exciting and I am ready for it. Moving to fashion, Pantaloons has been on everyone’s list including me when one thinks of shopping. From ethnic to western to footwear it always comes to rescue when one needs to buy a variety of clothing or footwear. From Pantaloons to Allen Solly and Van Heusen I grew up! A great attire always gives one confidence and these brands make sure that we are ready to make it big in our lives. With all these instances from life the reason ABG is big in my life is because it has not just given products but some memories to reminisce upon.

I was in my second semester of college, still acquainting myself with the fashion world. Having been a fat kid before and conscious of myself, I didn’t pay much attention to what I wore. But things had changed since I joined college. I had lost a lot of weight and clothes became my best friends. My first fashion obsession was chinos. I bought them all, yellow, mustard, violet, maroon and the list goes on. And which brand to better make chinos with panache than Allen Solly. I bought around 15 of them and tried to sport a new one every day of the week. Clothes are often cited as a basic necessity in the triad of “roti, kapda, makaan” but clothes were now a means of establishing my identity. They allowed me to be bold, experimental, and unique, in my own subtle way. Allen Solly communicated a message that I found appealing, elegant but reinvigorating. Their designs were fresh but they followed a design philosophy which was consistent.

Taking India to the World

It was as a high school student that I came across this powerful commercial which ended with these words - 'Aditya Birla Group , taking India to the World'. Very few groups can stamp their authority with such class as ABG. ABG is a story of grit, determination and passion. Born out of a family which dreamed of conquering horizons from their arid roots of a 19th century desert town, the Birlas braved many a storm. To think that an Indian could have his own jute empire in 20th century British India and later negotiate the difficulties of the notorious 'License Raj' by establishing factories in Thailand is a vindication of the very same words which would become their group slogan - 'Taking India to the World'. While in our daily lives we cannot help but be touched by ABG in some way or the other, it was through books that I came to know the group much better. Traveling back after a round of shopping, I continued through Gurcharan Das' India Unbound. There was a sense of awe and admiration reading through G.D Birla's association with the freedom struggle and his companionship with the Mahatma all the while smiling satisfactorily within while glancing at the Van Heusen merchandise I had bought. Today the group conglomerate touches our lives in many ways be it the clothes we wear, the mobile networks we use or the cement which goes into our surrounding buildings. In many ways Aditya Birla Group represents the ethos of our 2000 year old civilization - we have both re-imagined and reinterpreted ourselves with the changing times, Aditya Birla isn't what it was a 100 years back and so isn't India and that is what lends its timelessness to us.

As a sole child of my parents, I was one of the most reserved and introverted people you will ever come across, a borderline Sheldon Cooper if you will. However, it so happened that due to good grades in 12th standard, I was required to move out of the house to a bigger city to pursue my dream to become an engineer from one of the most reputed institutes “College of Engineering Pune”. It was beyond my wildest imagination to share my living space with anyone apart from my parents.  However, as it is rightly said, ‘Difficult times often bring out the best in people’. Spending four years at the college hostel and sharing my life, failing and learning with every occasion with the so-called bunch of strangers now the best of friends has made me what I am today. A major lesson of Change being the only constant was learnt and not to say that I am accomplished yet but certainly not reserved and definitely a better version of my former self.
