The Real Life MBA - Cosmikids - Learning The EQ Way

The Real Life MBA - Cosmikids - Learning The EQ Way

When a man went for a stroll, he met a new mother of two who was taking a stroll with her two kids in the pram. One boy and one girl. Introducing them to the man, she said, ‘Hey look, this little boy, his name is so and so and he is a doctor and this little girl here is so and so and she is a lawyer.’ They haven’t been able to walk on their two feet yet but the plans of their successful lives have been made. Or take another example from the movie 3 Idiots, where the profession of Mona Singh’s un-born child was already decided. The question we must ask ourselves is, are we engineers, doctors, lawyers, MBA or are we beyond that? Can we let our academics and profession define who we are as individuals? Is it time that we step out of our conventional roles and go on a journey of self-exploration and discovery and decide for ourselves what we really want to do?

Entrepreneurship has seen a steady rise in today’s time. It’s not only about making profits, but it is also a process of designing and crafting an enterprise that sustains in the long run and also has a value addition to the society. And it definitely is not an easy process. It starts with an array of uncertainties and challenges but it can only have three possible outcomes - one, it will take off and do really well; or two, it will not work and you will drown; or three, you will just manage it enough to make ends meet. As Robert Kiyosaki and Sharon Letcher put it in their book ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad’, “Starting a business is like jumping out of an airplane without a parachute. In mid-air, the entrepreneur begins building a parachute and hopes it opens before hitting the ground.”

A mass migration was witnessed in human history in 1947. The partition of India saw many wealthy merchants from Pakistan being displaced to India through the Gulf of Kutch. Overnight, these merchants were left with nothing but their aspirations, a will to survive and to make a difference. One such family that crossed borders was the Bhagnani family. After coming to Bombay, the Bhagnani family gave birth to a son, Mr Mohandas Bhagnani, who would change the way middle class Mumbai consumed it's street-side chat.

The Real Life MBA - K. Rustom's Ice Cream Parlour - The Unscheduled Halt For Ice Cream

Ice Creams and Ice Cream Parlours have been an all-generation favourite for decades and decades. Our very own Aamchi Mumbai has seen the evolution of stand-alone ice cream parlours to multi-chain outlets. Baskin Robins from California, Gelato from Italy and Haagen Dazs from New York have continued what our friendly neighbourhood parlours had begun. Our neighbourhood parlours like Naturals and Apsara have themselves spawned franchisees all over the city and beyond. And In this age where we all scream Ice-cream for these modern formats, K.Rustom, a stand-alone, half a century old, ice-cream parlour has been able to not only sustain but has managed to thrive.

The Real Life MBA - Britannia Cafe - Nostalgia On A Plate

In the early 1900s, commerce in the city of Mumbai was dominated by Gujarati and Parsi traders. The shops which were located on the corners of lanes weren't preferred by the Gujarati traders as they were 'Sinh-mukhi' or shaped like a lion's face, which was considered inauspicious in Hinduism. They preferred the non-corner shops as they were 'Gau-mukhi' or shaped like a cow's face - a very auspicious shape for Hindus. The corner shops were thus available for much cheaper rates and Parsis all over the city took up these shops and several of them were turned into Irani restaurants, a few of which have survived the advent of modernity.
