The COVID-19 pandemic made everyone work from the confines of their homes. The same was the case with the selection processes of most of the B-schools this year. Instead of visiting the campuses in person to attend the interviews, our entire batch had to attend the interviews online. The interview experience at SJMSOM was unique and stood out amongst the lot. Instead of just clicking a link and being greeted by the interviewers, we were asked to join a platform Gather. The Gather platform was an almost perfect simulation of an offline interview. We were all put into groups and each group was guided by a member of the Admissions Committee. We had a chance to interact with our seniors while on the platform. The process consisted of two stages – Document verification and Personal Interview. Every person in a group was allowed to attend both the processes during his/her turn.
My interview experience at SJMSoM, IIT Bombay for the 2023 batch was the best interview experience amongst all the B schools that I have appeared for the interview. I had my interview scheduled for the 4th of March afternoon slot. SJMSoM opted for the Gather platform to manage the whole interview process. The software was created to give an actual offline in-person-like interview experience at SJMSoM virtually. This was the main highlight of the entire admission process. It allowed us to interact with other candidates as well as there were mentors and volunteers in case of any query or emergency. They also created the mock session, to familiar us all with the Gather platform. The platform was highly interactive, it felt complex initially but turned out to be a lot of fun. The team also arranged Tom and Jerry episodes as stress busters. The mentors turned out to be very helpful by sharing their own experiences as well as clearing each and every query multiple times very patiently.
I sat in front of my laptop at 9 am, the time I was told to join for my interview. Uncertain about my turn, staring at “Please wait the meeting host will let you in soon”, I was confused as to why the interview process couldn’t be handled better. The very next day I had my SJMSOM interview and it’s such a sea of change. The “Gather” platform is fun to use and allows us to mimic the waiting room talks we could have been part of, in a physical environment. I spoke to others in the virtual waiting room and it helped me go for my interview with a cool head.
The month of February and March was full of interviews one after the another. Due to Covid, everything was happening virtually.
The admission process for MBA program of all colleges this year has been quite different with everyone having to switch to online platforms. However, among all the interviews, the one that stands out clearly will be SJMSOM, IIT Bombay. It was around in March first week. The most interesting aspect of this process was that we need to start it with a platform named “GATHER”. It was an attempt by the admission committee at SJMSOM to make the session more interactive despite of having the challenge of an online interview process. A proper demo session was also conducted to ease out the anxiety and nervousness caused due to this unique process. It was definitely interesting to talk or chat to anyone in groups including the seniors on the platform. The platform reminded me of the games like Mario we used to play in our childhood.
