What MBA can teach you?

What MBA can teach you?

Who does not want to be called an IIM graduate, despite the fact that each year only around 2000 could make it? Making it into an IIM takes a fair amount of hard work, but guys life ahead is not bed of roses.

Myths about doing an MBA

Myths about doing an MBA

One year into FMS has been a hell of a ride. From the moment you enter the auditorium full of 200 people to realize that you actually made it here to the moment you have the best conversation with a friend and you realize that yes, you indeed  made some great bond here, FMS has been an enriching and one if the best experiences in life so far. Yes it’s a great learning experience but apart from that it is a direct opportunity for you to think where your preferences and priorities lie. Looking back at the last 7 months, I can point out a startling difference in me and I certainly feel that being here has played a major role in this. Meeting all the different people throughout this time and learning from each and every one of them has played a crucial role. It is like  a vast pool of knowledge and depends on us how much we are able to absorb. However, the external perceptions that people generally have about a business school say something else. So before joining college, a number of people advised me and the complexity involved was not so welcoming. Now that I am here I classify them as the top 3 traditional myths associated with every business school.

Many flew into the “cuckoo’s nest”

Many flew into the “cuckoo’s nest”

While most of us would admire McMurphy’s fight against the tyrannical Miss Ratched to fly outside the cage leaving footprints on someone life, fact is, most of us are in this cage on our will. Now, there may be a very fine lining between what you may refer to as “free will” and “a subconscious will”. It took long enough for me to realise that I am going against what my subconscious would have wanted. But, then again, the subconscious is a whacky little dude probably high on meth sitting in the closet (It’s tough to hold a grasp on it, isn’t it!).

Inside an IIM: Are you actually busy or pseudo-busy?

Inside an IIM: Are you actually busy or pseudo-busy?

People keep hearing different versions of stories explaining the perceived 'busy-ness' of an IIM student, especially in IIM A, B and C. They either hear it from their friends who are IIM students or read it on various avenues like InsideIIM. I am a first-year PGP student from IIM Bangalore (referred as 'B') and let me uncover this mystery to everybody's advantage!

Life in K-Kups.

Life in K-Kups.

Oh God! Harsha Bhogle got the first movers advantage. He said it before I could say the same sentence. And so I’ll have to quote him saying, “I always believed that the most difficult thing in this world is to get into an IIM, however after coming here I realized that the most difficult thing is to get out of here”. We guys have to be very careful while writing something here. It has to be checked and cross-checked that the thing you are writing hasn’t been written by someone else at any other place, because here “Plagiarism is a serious offence and is looked down upon”. “The consequences may be severe” and “& it will be strictly dealt with”. You have to be vigilant at every step. Think before saying or doing anything. One can’t do things just for the sake of doing; it has to be backed by a strong reason and a rationale. Ha ha – that’s too much of a dose for a beginner or an outsider. Welcome to life@IIM-K, oops it’s “The Indian Institute Of Management Kozhikode” and very rightly we call it “God’s own Kampus”. Of course that’s not a spelling error. At IIM-K everything starts with K, and at K we call in Kampus. And beware we are very passionate about it. Once you stay at any IIM, no matter what kind of a person you are, everything is wiped off. Now you belong to that place and that tag defines you and stays with you forever. That is the power of an IIM and not only IIM-K but every other IIM. This is how they are designed and made. It’s really worth to be here, and all those aspirations and dreams and efforts do not go in vain. Step in here and you are assured that next two years of life will be well spent.
