Despite all the hate that Placecommers may get, at b-school, this is one of the most sought-after committees to join. So why is that? What are the advantages that come with joining the Placement Committee? Is it true that Placecommers get the best jobs on campus? If yes, why is that? How do Placecommers have an edge over others during the b-school placement process? And what are the cons of joining the placement committee? It’s been exactly a month since I gave the final exam of my MBA (unofficial completion of MBA.) As the admission season picks pace, the topics discussion like ‘Is MBA overrated?’, ‘What is the ROI of an MBA?’ etc., spread like wildfire on social media pages. Sitting at home made me also think about how I’ll best describe my MBA. So here is my take (hopefully something novel) on this somewhat Cliché topic. I would like to term it as ‘Value added/derived’ rather than calling it an ROI because not everything you gain might be measurable in absolute numbers.
Being a commerce student, quants was my weakest point. I started my preparation in August 1st week and I had almost 4 months to prepare for CAT but since I was working, I had just weekends and the spare, 2 or 3 hours after working for 10-11 hours in the office. If you guys think that in mocks, your percentile is lower and when will it actually go up, just to give you a startling fact, I was getting around 49%ile in August, 60%ile till September. Then, around 80% till October Mid. It was only by November 1st week, that I started getting around 90%ile by November. So, how did I do it?
In my second year of engineering, I had a choice to make whether to pursue MS or to pursue MBA. I had heard about the ISB-YLP Programme from my seniors. I decided that research wasn't for me and I wanted to be on the business side of things so the decision to pursue an MBA was made way early while I was in my second year.
Graduation degrees in India are often pointless. Many of us are unsure after our graduation on what to do next. Our parents can't help us at this point because most middle class Indian parents haven't studied beyond graduation themselves. This is when we have to dig deeper within and find what excites us and what kind of work will give us satisfaction.
