Wonder who does the 'charity'!

Wonder who does the 'charity'!

I joined IIFT after working in a corporate house for three years. When I got to know that IIFT has a 4 credit course where each student would have to work with a local NGO, it did not make much sense to me. After working with Aarohan for the past 3 weeks I realize what an important role it has played in my life. There are few experiences which we tend to call ‘life changing’ and I would term this internship as my first.

Indian Institute of Management Shillong has turned its attention towards nurturing the young students in Shillong in a right direction. ECoBiZ club of IIM Shillong along with Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI) has conducted a ‘Pioneer Leadership Workshop’ for the local students of Shillong. The one day workshop, supported by Lions Club of Shillong was mainly focused on bringing out leaders in Shillong in the field of environment. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Amitabha De, Director of IIM Shillong, Mr. Arun Das, Lions Club president and Mr. Arun Krishnamurthy, EFI president. Dr. De highlighted the importance of this initiative and stressed upon how development should go hand in hand with conservation. He told the students that conservation should begin from each individual.

The Children of the Railway Platform

The Children of the Railway Platform

It was the social awareness program, a four credit course, towards the end of the first year that gave me an opportunity to work with this NGO serving the underprivileged in the streets of British Calcutta. On my first day, I had expected that unlike the slums in trans-yamuna delhi and Bombay’s Dharavi, the little kids here won't be able to communicate in Hindi. But, to my surprise, they were not only fluent and in Hindi but at times they would speak even Oriya.
