Hello everyone! This is my first post on InsideIIM, and instead of writing about my achievement, I would like to head start by addressing an issue that is considered taboo. Let's talk about homosexuality and how it is perceived in society and the corporate world. I remember during a GD (Group Discussion) round at one of the top b-schools, we were asked to discuss the gender diversity at the workplace. It was a fabulous discussion. People introduced the topic by stating the importance of the inclusivity of the third gender in the corporate sector. It was a factual and logical discussion which ended with a consensus, but as soon as we left the GD room, things turned out to be the opposite. I observed group members giggling, laughing, and bragging about being able to lie perfectly during the GD. This is exactly what I want to address through this post. During formal interactions, we all consciously support the idea of the inclusivity of people with a different sexual orientation or gender identity, but as soon as we enter an informal setup, our ideologies take a U-turn. We need to ask ourselves a few questions.
Marriage! Let's talk about marriage. Does it seem a very normal thing? Ok then, let's talk about raising kids, too far? Ok then, shall we talk about a joint bank account? Where are you trying to get to? you might ask, well here it is. How would you feel if I said that these seemingly normal, regular things are not so normal for everyone? For the majority of the people (that even bothered to stop and have a look at this post :-P), these things just "happen" as part of life. However, there are few others who are threatened with life, ostracized by family, society and religion alike, ridiculed and considered to have a "disease" and suggested "cures". If you have not guessed it by now, yes, I am talking about homosexuality. These "normal" things for the majority of the people are in fact privileges for homosexual persons. These are just a minute fraction of a long list of things that are out of reach for them for no good reason at all.
n our society, heterosexual people have many privileges over the LGBTQ community, those who are discriminated based on their sexual orientation Or gender identity. Let me list them for you all. 1)Acceptance- The preeminent privilege, whose virtue we don't realize in our life. This privilege is most desirable for the LGBTQ community For decades, they have been fighting for acceptance from our society. It is a simple thing which they want from the people around them. 2)Freely expressing your sexuality.- For homosexual people, It is a prevalent thing to share your loved one name or your love openly. Whereas, LGBTQ people have to hide it. They can't express or convey their love for someone openly. 3)Having equal job opportunities - There is an abundant number of cases where people have been fired for sexual orientation on the rationale of "unlawful behaviour". Recently a teacher from Kolkata was fired for the same reason. I don't need to elaborate on how crucial and essential to have a job. Every day, Living in the fear of getting fired, that is one of the worst things a person has to go through. 4) Socializing-There are no boundaries over homosexual people, they can socialize with any random group they want. At the same time, the LGBTQ people are expected to be around people of the same community. 5) Expressing- Homosexual people can post photos with their loved ones openly on social media platforms without thinking for a minute. They can express relationship and breakup story openly and can ask for guidance regarding the same. Whereas, LGBTQ doesn't have this liberty at all. Only a small portion of people has come out openly regarding their relationship status. 6)Travelling- Everyone loves to travel and explore different places. However, LGBTQ has to be careful regarding that. The laws and rules are different in different countries around the world. Also, people of various counties react differently to the LGBTQ Community. Due to this reason, They have to think twice before travelling any place and can't express their sexual preference openly. This list will go on. I would like you all to think over it. On September 6, 2018, The Supreme Court Of India decriminalized section 377. Giving equal opportunities and rights to the LGBTQ community. However, discrimination practices are still going on. Be it a sports field, entertainment field, corporate offices, government institutions, the LGBTQ community is having a hard time getting acceptance from everyone. We an individual should take one step forward and make sure to eradicate these discriminatory practices.

Q. "What a fag, that's so gay!" Is it okay to have people who do not have to think twice before confronting or engaging in these kinds of comments? why is it easier to be straight? List down the privileges heterosexual people have over those who are discriminated based on their sexual orientation Or gender identity!
