With only a year of teaching at IIM Rohtak, Prof. Ankur Jain has already bagged his students' affection and appreciation, being voted as the Professor of the Year 2020. What is it about his method of teaching that appeals to his students so? In this video, Prof. Jain talks of his teaching experience, and tells us a few anecdotes from his classroom. This is part 2 of Prof. Ankur Jain's interview, in our series, InsideIIM Professor of the Year.
Prof. Ankur Jain has done his MBA from FMS Delhi. During his MBA, he did his summer internship with ITC Ltd. and bagged a PPO. Working as an Assistant Manager, he soon realised that this was not what he saw himself doing for the coming future. It was around this time that he recognised his passion was academics, remembering his classroom days fondly. He began applying for PhD courses, and got into IIM Bangalore for his PhD in Organizational Behaviour Studies. Post that, he joined IIM Rohtak as a faculty member in the Organization Behaviour and Human Resource Department. In just a year's time, he has managed to gain his students' affection and appreciation.
In this video, Prof. Jain tells us how he decided to get into teaching, and gives us a glimpse into his journey. He speaks of his classes and how he tries to make them as interactive and engaging as possible. While case studies are a great way to teach students, reading and understanding the case isn't enough, he says. The students need to be engaged by the case enough that by the end of it they understand the case deeply and learn something valuable. To further engage his students, he chooses to use a lot of pictures and visuals in his presentations, sometimes putting only a question that can prompt his students to think.
