With a view to help managers of tomorrow calibrate their learnings from class with decades worth of real-life industry experience, IIM Shillong will be hosting its first ever Business Leadership Summit from the 14th to 16th of September. IIM Shillong, the youngest of the old and oldest of the new IIMs, will host industry veterans from a number of fields to ensure that students get a comprehensive view of how the evolving world of today impacts each aspect of a business. Aptly themed ‘Refine, Define & Design Business in New India’, the conclave aims to use a strong industry-academia interaction to pave the way for the future of our nation using the best of forward-looking innovation backed by the strongest of business lessons learned so far.

One such aspect is the study of human behaviour, a complex task that haunts many organizations. The deviations in behaviour from the norm affect the outcome of various operational systems. Identification and understanding of such inconsistencies to strive for overall operational efficiencies has become the key area of interests of researchers. Keeping this in mind, IIM Shillong will host eminent persons from the organizations that have effectively overcome these challenges such as Deutsche Bank Operations VP Ashok Pareek. Deutsche Bank developed a series of measures to support leaders and employees to account for the potential emotional effects of change in the firm. These include guidelines on managing change, surveys to assess how employees are processing the change mentally, along with coaching, workshops, and training on how to increase efficiency.

Further, the Indian private sector has witnessed the emergence of many start-ups that rose to become unicorns. These start-ups using digitalization have successfully challenged legacy businesses to re-think their go-to-market strategies. To discuss this topic from a consulting point of view, speakers from different domains like entertainment, operations and start-ups have been invited such as Zee Entertainment CBO Mihir Modi, who has previously worked in various sectors and played a major role in transforming the company from a television broadcaster to a 360-degree entertainment conglomerate. He will share the panel with Mr. Vikas Pawar, who is associated with the supply chain sector for around 12 years and has experience in industry research related to global freight and airlines verticals and Happily Unmarried Co-founder Rajat Tuli.

The Business Leadership Summit will also host two stimulating panel discussions on topics pertaining to the finance sector. The panels will be graced by esteemed leaders such as Value Research CEO Dhirendra Kumar, Infosys BPM CFO Nishit Shah, and Kotak Mahindra Asset Management CIO-Equity Harsha Upadhayaya among others.

In FY17’, individual wealth in financial assets grew by 14.63% and the gold demand dropped by 12% in FY’18 resulting in an import decrease of around 41%. On these lines, the first panel will probe ‘Whether Financial Assets Are New Gold for The Indian Middle Class?’

India has come a long way to become $ 2.6 trillion economies as of April 2018. It is projected to be a 5 trillion economies by 2025, claimed Mr. Suresh Prabhu. The second discourse aims to examine ‘The Role of the Financial Sector in Making India a 10 Trillion-Dollar Economy’.

To discuss one of the most essential aspects of a growing India, the conclave will hold panels on the topics ‘HR transforms from an enabling partner to a strategic partner’ and ‘Rebuilding India with a billion human resource’. In the current dynamic business scenario and the evolving organisational structure, HR departments are becoming strategic partners in the organisation and ensuring that the most valuable asset i.e. employees contribute to the best of their capabilities and achieve not only the organisational goals but also their personal goals of growth and development.  In today’s competitive jobs market, attractive salaries and job perks are quite common. However, employees are looking beyond them. It is here where a successful HR strategy comes into its own. The most successful HR departments while, are focusing on their people, differ in how they concrete their reputation for innovative strategies. The panellists for these discussions include top executives from companies like Colgate GBS, Hero, Kotak, Intex Technologies, Microland Ltd., Jaipur Rugs, Catterpillar, RIL Industries and Inspirage.

During the summit, marketing enthusiasts will be treated to two stimulating panel discussions on topics that are relevant with the industry. The grace the panels, the institute will host Mr Vijay Kadu, VP – Sales at Business Standard, Mr. Rajesh Hurkat, Head HR- Mattel India & South East Asia Mattel Global Emerging Markets, Mr. Anand Singh, Sr. VP - Freundenberg Filtration Technologies India Pvt Ltd, Mr. Kapil Arora, President – North Ogilvy Group Companies and Mr. Gaurav Mehta, CMO- Girnar Soft. The topics for the discussion are ‘Coming of age: Digital Marketing in India’ and ‘Marketing to the burgeoning youth of India’.

IIM Shillong hopes the conclave, the first of its kind in the institute will prove fruitful to all participants in developing a strong idea of the current business scenario coupled with the motivation to define a new India.
