Sitting on the foot of Garo Khasi Mountain range, Shillong the capital of Meghalaya facilitates another addition to the brand of IIM. This new among the oldest and old among the pristine has already crossed the 10 year milestone and is envisioning to make an international recognition for itself.
IIM Shillong has a proactive approach towards sustainability and this establishment believes in giving back to the society, for that the campus facilitates a Centre for Development of North Eastern Region (CEDNER). Here the resonance between academics, sustainability and contribution to society is similar to the symbiotic relationship that a rich forest ecosystem has and that is what IIM Shillong stands for.
Sustainability in IIM Shillong starts the moment an individual steps inside the institute, one can easily spot campuses’ bare minimum dependency on plastics (for example usage of bamboo dustbins instead of plastics). Formally the institute facilitates a week long foundation course on sustainability where the participants are imparted with the knowhow on how to practice the concept in corporates, through practicing practical tasks and discussing case experiences. The course concludes with a daylong ecological experience with nature which includes trekking thought the mountains and discovering the culture of locals where they invite the students to their sacred Mawphlang groove to understand the importance of biodiversity. The seniors in the institutes have been heard saying that this is one of the most mesmerising experience during the 2 years of their education.
CEDNER the initiative taken to give back to the society which is operated by the institute, students also contribute through the platform Nurturing Minds which was initiated in the memory of Bharat Ratna Late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam with the objective to connect with the local community and take a step towards Dr Kalam’s vision of ‘Education for All’. Under it the students of IIM Shillong welcome various students from the local schools and help them build concepts of Mathematics with the intention to see them in better position in future. Apart from mathematics nurturing minds is also venturing into areas pertaining to build creativity like art, craft and music.
The USP of the campus in clouds is the atmosphere it has of peer learning. Here students, in-spite of the cut-throat competition take pride in helping another fellow succeed and this culture is passed from batch to batch. One such example of supporting a fellow students is that the hostel rooms in IIM Shillong are never locked and the peers have complete access to each other’s assets in case they need anything. So sustainability is even imbibed into the attitude of residents of IIM Shillong.
What makes the campus of IIM Shillong unique is the life it offer to the students inside the campus with its diverse clubs and committees, however its flagship event the Golf Cup takes it to whole new level. The event witnesses’ over 150 pioneering golfers and is one of a kind for any business school in India. What makes it more alluring is the fact that the event facilitates top corporate professionals with the management background in a leisurely atmosphere. Lastly all one could say about the daily life at IIM Shillong would be that the most monotonous thing here is that one gets to witness nature’s scenic beauty and breath in fresh non-polluted air every day.

My choice of ABG Company would be Idea Cellular Limited which after the merger will be the elephant of the telecom industry in India. Telecom domain is a favourable area because of the increasing internet penetration across the country and government’s vision to digitalize India, due to these reasons there is an increased probability of growth for an individual in this domain. Adding to this, with the increasing demand for telecom sector in the market there is an increased scope of innovation both in the technical domain and business domain which is a fascinating factor. Apart from this the reason I would prefer Idea Cellular Limited is because of my engineering background that provides me with the required technical aptitude necessary to understand the business quickly.
