Name an instance where you wanted something and went out of your comfort zone to achieve it OR Tell us the biggest risk you have taken so far in your life.
Being a science student, I never had the opportunity to learn accounting and budgeting as a subject. When I joined Bajaj Auto Ltd. I realized the importance of Cost Accounting for an Engineer. I was required to plan capital and cost budgets for my plant and had no idea how to go about it. I learned the same from Youtube and completed my job for the year. Through this experience, I discovered my knack for accounting and got admitted to the Institute of Cost and Management Accounting (to pursue CMA) in December 2019. Despite being busy with office work and CAT preparations, I decided to go for it. I had to compromise my sleep and work night shifts to attend classes. I eventually did well in work and academics, bagging the GTE of the year award and acing CAT 2020. Not only that, I cleared the Intermediate level of CMA in 2020. This experience taught me the importance of time management and strategizing. I was operating outside my comfort zone, and my learning curve was unprecedented. It also made me realize my potential to achieve anything in this world and inculcated confidence & grit.
When was the last time someone relied on you? OR What did you do which was purely for someone else - a truly selfless act?
During the first wave of COVID, a line operator in my plant was in dire need of cash as his wife was hospitalised. I had just started earning and had only Rs. 50,000 as savings in my account. The fellow employee told me he has exhausted his lifes savings in the treatment and needs Rs. 1,00,000 urgently. I encouraged all line operators to contribute as much as they could and donated Rs. 30,000 myself. We raised Rs. 94,000, which proved to be enough at the time. Moreover, he needed 2 units per day for his wife's daily blood transfusion. I knew a few people from Youth Red Cross, an NGO I was associated with during my undergrad, who helped me connect with the local blood bank. That helped him get enough blood during the treatment. A few of my colleagues and I also donated blood to help him out. His wife recovered soon after.
Tell us about a time when you disagreed with an opinion/idea/decision. What did you do about it?
Ill take the instance of my previous work experience for this answer, At Bajaj Auto Ltd., containers were loaded with 20 3-wheeler vehicles for the past 9 years, and due to COVID, the number of containers was to be reduced due to govt. regulations and higher container costs. In one 40' container, there were 22 crates: 20 vehicles, 1 engine crate and 1 spare part crate. The task was identified to be almost impossible, and my manager was reluctant as he thought that the loadability was already optimised. I knew that if the spare parts crate was removed and the spare parts were somehow adjusted in the vehicle crate, we could add one more vehicle crate. Luckily, there was enough space for utilization as the chassis of a 3-wheeler vehicle is open type. To convince my manager, I used my skills in 3D modelling and showed him the 3D model of the new loading schema. Because of the backing of data, he was convinced. The pilot was run, and 21 vehicles are now loaded in one container instead of 20. The project saves over 13 crores annually in exports for Bajaj Auto Ltd.
What is the one thing you can claim to have some level of expertise or depth of knowledge in - it could be anything - a subject, a sport, a hobby, a venture, an initiative that has led you to do deep work in that field?
Professionally, I have a thorough understanding of the Operations and Supply Chain domain. I have deep knowledge of TPM pillars, Lean manufacturing principles and the Toyota Production System as I have worked on both as a BPS (Bajaj Production System) committee member in Bajaj Auto Ltd. I have also gained an innate sense of cognizance in the field of OSHAS (ISO 45000) as I was appointed as Safety Manager for FY 2020-21 for the 3-wheeler assembly shop. I also have a depth of knowledge in Cost Accounting and Taxation Laws as I pursue CMA. On a personal level, I am very passionate about quizzing. I have won various national-level quizzes as well. Adding to it, I was the quizmaster for numerous national-level quizzes. This hobby has helped me gain a breadth of knowledge in various domains. Quizzing has also helped me learn learning with practice as it allows me to think back to the information previously learned and remember them while quizzing.
If 10 Million Dollars (approximately INR 75 Crores) is given to you to use it any way you deem fit what would you do with this corpus?
The corpus will be divided into 3 parts - 5:3:2. Firstly, 50% of the corpus amount, i.e., 5 million dollars, will be invested in a clean energy startup. I think clean energy is not only needed in the future, but it is the future. With the rise of Electric Vehicles and other electrical alternatives like induction cooktops, the need is clean energy and the ability to harness it. The start-up that Ill invest in is Zolt Energy, as I think it provides the most promise in the sector. Secondly, 30 % of the corpus amount, i.e., 3 million dollars, will be donated to NGOs aimed at providing sanitation across the length and breadth of India. I sincerely believe that cleanliness, hygiene, and access to safe drinking water are essential for maintaining human health and welfare. It is not only a requirement for health, but it supports livelihoods, school attendance, and dignity, as well as builds strong communities with wholesome surroundings. Lastly, the remaining 2 million dollars will be invested in Equity, Debt & FDs for long-term & short-term plans and steady cash inflow. Some part of it will also be invested in digital assets as they are the high risk-high return commodities.
