Like the two lakhs MBA aspirants every year, I also dreamt of being a part of the prestigious Indian Institute of Management (IIM). With the ambition of realising my dream, I started the CAT preparation. Being a medical student, this journey wasn’t a cakewalk for me. The whole day long college lectures, to daily evaluation; things were bit arduous but my dream of getting in to an IIM motivated me to work diligently and I wrote CAT 2017.
Being a photographer, some part of heart always wanted to go to IIM Shillong. And from the day I arrived here, there's not one moment where I didn't appreciate its beauty. But that's not what impressed me the most here. Being one of the top B-school's is one good part. The other is that, IIM Shillong from its very inception has envisioned a self-sustaining a society that enhances the basic principles and value system of symbiotic living. IIM Shillong doesn't just say it, but follows it. We had one week of course on sustainability where we were taught its basic concepts. Through the week, we were taught to interrogate the understandings of basic tenets of life and living with the principles and practices of sustainable development. The effect of the concept of sustainability in various sectors of finance, marketing and operations were taught. Maybe classroom learning is something that even the other B-schools do. But course ended with a trip to a nearby forest. That was one of the most peaceful trips I ever had. Mawphlang forest is one of the biggest sacred forests of the world. We spent around two hours in the forest knowing about the different species of plants inside. The natural beauty that sustainability has kept with the forest was beautiful. The fact that not even a single tree was cut for more than 800 years, is a live example of sustainability. We went for a short trip inside the forest and then went for a trek nearby. That trek is something that changed our view about sustainability. Being a photographer, I always admired nature's beauty. But this time, I was feeling peaceful and happy for it. The view of the green valley inside the clouds was the most beautiful thing I ever saw. Walking through the valley, feeling the clouds on our face and the slight showers every now and then, every moment is memorable. The importance of sustainability then sunk into us. We didn't even get the thought of throwing any garbage there, as we usually do everywhere else. More than the fun we had, the realization we got, played more on ourselves. That will remain as one of the most memorable moments of my life.
Personally for me, coming to IIM Shillong was one of the most unique experiences of my life as I had to literally pack my bags and leave from Mumbai on 9 hours notice as I was one of the last converts from the waiting list. IIM Shillong which is in Mayurbhunj Complex used to be the summer palace of the King of Orissa, which in itself is one the most exotic experiences ever. It is an exciting institution to be a part of as being the seventh IIM founded in the year 2007 it is the newest among the old IIMs and the oldest among the new IIMs. It’s vision is to become an internationally recognised institute with a global outlook grounded in Indian values. It’s mission is to generate and disseminate knowledge in all aspects of management education for sustainable development and to develop innovative leaders with strong ethical values. The institution aligns its ethics with the vision which Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam had for our college and the nation.
My campus IIM Shillong is unique in a unique way, it is a management campus situated in such a part of the country which witnesses very less amount of business activity. It won’t be wrong to draw an analogy of our college with Las Vegas to underpin the fact that both are the hub of something which is rare and scarce in its vicinity. The very fact that we are physically far away from business hubs of India, makes us responsible for the region and people. As a responsible B-School graduates we always seek and strive for upliftment of our logical and strategic abilities which when clubbed with our management knowledge, can be used for the growth and progress of our organization and eventually our society.
Located in the East Khasi Hills district, 4908 feet above the sea level, the IIM Shillong campus has a serene, congenial and pollution free environment which surely feels like a paradise. “Campus in Clouds” what they call, it feels like you are wrapped in a white satin with beauty all around to quench your soul. With lush green forests and well-maintained lawns, the institute was set up at the Mayurbhanj Palace, which dates back to the Mayurbhanj Kings of Odisha. The location of the campus is unique in respect of beauty and panoramic views of picturesque. Not only the campus oozes the peace and tranquillity, but the people too have a different sense of calmness and are a composition which makes us feel at home. The campus is strongly grounded in core values and adheres to it in every single possible way. Ethical values, compassion for others and concern for society is what makes my campus stand out from others. The campus has a good diversity of students among all age groups, from engineers to arts, single to married, Delhi to Port Blair, from every corner of the country, students have come together which helps us in acquiring much broader mindset, learn every culture and explore about them. The best part about my campus is its ever-growing emphasis on sustainability and business practices. A foundation course on Sustainability for one week was specifically set up for all the students to sensitize them about the alarming need of balance between commercialisation and values. The course was made well engaged and innovative throughout with lots of extracurricular activities in between. The course end was followed by a Sustainability Trek to Mawphlang Sacred Forests. The place literally made you feel like you are in Scotland of East. Open grass fields and a little mist, the view was completely mesmerising. We were educated about the history of forest, the trees which are 800 years old and the Khasi traditions which used to take place. The gurgling sound of a gentle brook, the chirping of birds amidst the calm of the forest soothes you. The trek has been the best part about college life so far and It's a lifetime experience that I shall cherish all my life.
The day I reached IIM Shillong I met a girl, she is my roommate and my batch mate, a little lost, a little weird. She came in the room and introduced her as Nikita. She looked tired and exhausted by the journey and has already familiarised with few other girls. She sounded like a grandmother and asked me to join her for the dinner with the rest of her so-called new mates. Now after being with her for so many days I can tell she is the craziest of all and yet the most sincere amongst everyone. She turns out to be paranoid when she thinks she’s lagging in her academics and turns out to be fanatical when we want to have fun. She is the one person who laughs at each and every rubbish joke ever cracked. She is insane with all the diligence.
The world is going through major changes especially with the advent of digitalization. Business operations are being redesigned to make newer models which are smarter, more efficient and greener. Businesses can now offer customers a personalized version of their products and services and can cater to the customer needs and demands in a more meticulous manner. With the change in technology, the management of such digitalized processes are also going to change. This has been my primary reason of pursuing a course in management studies after graduating as a computer science engineer. India has just started venturing into this new concept of digitalization and hence managers who have a mix of both managerial skills and technical know-how of the emerging technologies, will be required to take the nation forward in this path. A major aspect of the process of digitalization is the fact that as it aims at making judicial use of resources (material, human and time), it strives at making business processes sustainable. The Indian Institute of Management Shillong, ever since its inception has been striving to not only teach but also apply the concept of sustainability in its courses and on campus. For all these reasons I decided to take admission in the PGDM course of IIM Shillong.
It was a fine, new, yet a usual day. It had been around 3 weeks to the college but it felt like it had been the same for as long as I could remember or cared to remember. Not realizing, we had landed into a monotony of routine that was gradually fading the individuality of our personalities. I entered into the class with the usual expectation of the advancing of the course by the usual manner of approach by the well-recognized instructor. The only difference expected being the subject of discussion which also seemed familiar provided that we had gone through the course outline multitude of times. The spark of uniqueness in this era of monotony was so rare that we did not even realize its absence. We did not even realize that we were subconsciously missing something or were supposed to do so.
