If I were asked to choose a memorable experience at MDI or tell someone what is undeniably unique about our campus, I would definitely pick our week-long induction process to narrate to them. It all started on one fateful night, on the 14th of June 2018. This was when we were initiated to the life of an MBA (presumably) by our beloved student council. They set the tone right from the word go, and it has been continuing ever since. The most remarkable thing about this first interaction was that it was in total contrast of what everyone was expecting or had hoped for.
Management Development Institute! These words will not just define the next two years but my entire lifetime. It’s been only one month here and I believe I have performed on levels I never knew even existed and learned more things than I ever had. Living and studying with some of the best minds in my country, the kind of peer-to-peer learning experienced here is unmatchable. The presence of a strong alumni base and exceptional faculty at this institute ensures a wholesome learning experience. Before coming to MDI, I had mentioned multi-tasking as one of my strengths in my interviews and applications to other B-School but in the past month, I have realized I never really knew what multi-tasking was. Attending classes and completing assignments of seven different subjects, preparing and attending different industry exposure sessions, managing the major upcoming cultural event (keeping in mind there could be a surprise quiz the next day), cheering for my team during the sport events and then celebrating the victory, studying the case for a national level competition, keeping myself updated and preparing myself for the upcoming placement season, all in a single day! That’s what life is like in a B-School. It is overwhelming but trust me when I say this, it is an exhilarating experience! My family members are worried on a regular basis because of my sleep schedule but little can I make them realize that my dreams do not let me sleep anymore and power naps refuel my energy way more quickly than a full night's sleep. Getting into a formal suit within a couple of minutes did not even seem remotely possible, but at MDI, nothing is impossible! I laugh at myself when I recall the days before joining MDI back at my place, how I was worried about numerous things regarding my college but have a hard time now remembering any. For me, MDI is not just an institute, it is an experience on a whole, which I believe will be the most memorable one in the journey of my entire life and it will never truly be possible for me or anyone to put this experience down in words.
14Th July, 2018. 1 month since B School had begun. 30 days just flashed by! I cannot think where my time had gone. From the induction week, to classes, to club activities, to playing the drums, to basketball, to hurting my leg during basketball and going to the hospital, to the frustration at not getting to play but not having time to play anyway, to more assignments and 4:00 am deadlines, to buying a new tie and socks for sessions! Life. Was. Hectic!
On 12th June as I alighted on Gurugram railway station for the very first time in my life, I could feel the agglomeration of my dreams swarming through my mind. It was one of the most memorable moments of my life as I was about to take the first step towards realization of my dreams, I was about to join MDI Gurgaon.
It was getting intense. He could see the winning move. He was too eager to just end it in the next move and claim victory in a hard-fought match. As he was going to make the killing move, I said “Check.” All his joy changed into despair, he didn't see it coming. There was no way out of the vicious repetitions. He had 2 minutes extra on the clock and couldn’t take a draw. Three repetitions had happened and he was aghast. Didn't shake hands and just went away disgracefully. I was happy to get a draw but not so happy with his behaviour.
June 12th, 2018 was the day I joined MDI. It’s been over a month now, but trust me it feels like 12th June was years ago, because that’s how much I have experienced in a month. It seems so unreal to have had the experience and exposure of this magnitude in such a small time. MDI believes in extremes and these 5 weeks have been a testament to that. It is hard to pick one experience because every day it is a different story, a different kind of learning, a different challenge that needs to be overcome. But I would love to talk about my induction program experience because it was a glimpse of the next two years of my life and there were a lot of lessons to be learnt.
A beautiful location away from the main city, a lush green campus, an array of clubs & committees intended towards self-development, amazing faculty, friendly students .. BLAH, BLAH, BLAH .. And the list goes on …. Such similar string of words has been used time and again to make campuses across the world “UNIQUE”. But is that what actually makes a college campus unique?
My story at MDI, Gurgaon began on 14Th June 2018. I reached the college on my own and I started my journey here with lots of expectations and small desires. I came back to a college life 4 years after I left my engineering college and thus I wanted to ensure that I make the best out of my time here at MDI. Even though I had visited the campus for my selection interview, I did not get a chance that day to explore the campus fully. Now since I am a part of MDI, I decided to explore the lush green campus full of many beautiful insects and other species. While I was passing through the corridors of one of the academic blocks, I met a girl who was talking over her phone and trying to control her emotions. She appeared to be frightened and lonely. I realised that she was alone and I decided to talk to her and thought that my presence might provide her with some relief. She was so overwhelmed with her emotions that she came running towards me and hugged me tight and started crying hard. After a few minutes, I asked her to accompany me to my hostel room. Meanwhile, I asked her name and other details. After we reached our room, I made her feel comfortable and she appeared to be calm and relaxed. I realised that she was badly homesick and it was her first experience outside of her hometown. We both developed a good emotional connect and she found happiness in talking to me. I liked her character and honesty. I consoled her by narrating my own story when I first joined a hostel during my under-graduation. That gave her some confidence and peace of mind. I felt happy and relieved that I found one of the good friends I would have ever earned in my life. She is Shreya and she is one the biggest assets I gained from MDI. Till date, we are good friends and always finds comfort and support on each other’s shoulders. My life at MDI has given me a lifelong worth relationship and a happy life. MDI is not just another B school, it is a place where the family is created and nurtured.
