Gazing outside the window of the superfast train as I was travelling from Kolkata to Bhubaneswar, a million flashbacks of the past six months galloped through my mind. From reading comprehensions and practicing tricky quants to the doomsday and finally suiting up for interviews in various B-Schools, I choose a lushy green campus in the smart city of Bhubaneswar by the name of XIMB as my home for the next two years. Little did I know that the hard work and mental preparation in life before MBA was a mere cake walk and amidst the greenery that I was about to enter lies hundreds of sleepless nights, thousands of deadlines and a completely different life from the outside world.
It has hardly been 15 days that I joined Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar and it feels like an entire new world. To start with, the campus of XIMB is full of greenery. One can see the tall straight Eucalyptus trees queued perfectly on both the sides of the road to the inside of the campus. The glow board of XIMB, shining bright throughout the night and captures everyone’s eyes during the day. Situated in the heart of the city, this institute is the pride of Odisha.
Located at Xavier Square in the heart of the smart city of Bhubaneswar is XIMB, a very prestigious institute which has a rich legacy of over 30 years in grooming leaders of tomorrow. The institute has a beautiful lush green campus, excellent faculty and a very strong alumni base. One distinguishing feature of XIMB is the teaching pedagogy adopted by the professors which vary from classroom teaching to case studies to role-playing, going as per the subject requirement.
I have chosen XIMB because of its rigorous curriculum from which I will learn the time management skill which is the most important thing in corporate life. Apart from that, the campus is having 24 hours IT-enabled infrastructure, an excellent alumni base of over 30 years, great faculties who are the topmost in India. XIMB organises the biggest management fest, Xpressions in eastern India. Being a part of it one can get real life management lessons which will be really helpful. In residential B-School like XIMB, I can interact and get to learn many things from the peers of diverse backgrounds. I can take part in various core, functional and interest committees. Being a part of committees I will learn the real meaning of management and how to manage time. On deciding all these factors I decided to choose this campus. I got this information from the team Illuminatix which is the Media and PR cell of XIMB. They helped us in clarifying all our doubts before joining XIMB.
Imagine leaving your city, your people behind to come over to a place, where you have never been before. It was initially disheartening to leave Gurgaon and come over to Bhubaneshwar. But little did I know, that here also I will find people who will take care of us like our own family.
After I filled up the form of CAT 2018, the first question I asked to myself, how to select a college. Google helped extensively in answering this question and I had a list of colleges like XLRI, XIMB, IMT, IMI and a few others. I applied for four of them namely XLRI, XIMB, IMI and IMT and converted all three except XLRI. After that, it was very easy for me to choose one among them as others were no match to it.
First to let you know a little about myself before I delve into the topic of why and how I chose my campus so that you can have a little better understanding of my reasons. As a person, I have been an introvert most of my life so the only thing I had was my office and family life and rarely had any outside social interaction which led to my underdeveloped personality. I didn’t realize the intensity of my problem when I was working as a Network engineer but when I became a Sales Manager, it was not just my personal drawback anymore, it was also having a negative effect on the organization I was working for as well. As you know, being in the sales and marketing sector you have to be proactive with your decisions and people skills which I was lacking severely, this led to my decision of taking up professional business management education. But I didn’t want just an MBA degree, but an all-round development of me as a person and as well as a future managing executive. So, being a local resident of Odisha, I knew well about the excellence of XIMB and its culture, so it became my first preference for MBA education as it not only has an excellent structural academic syllabus with highly educated and capable professors but also has student-centric campus life. In the last two weeks that I have spent at XIMB campus, I got to see how people interact and work with each other in such a synchronised way and also have fun at the same time, the balance of work and personal life is amazing here. They organize many events at XIMB, such as cultural, sports and academic competitions so as to give students a much-needed platform to interact, build bonds with each other and also have a healthy competition among themselves. Lastly, the reason I chose XIMB was for both its academic excellence and its amazing unique culture.
It was 29th March, 2018 a usual working day. I reached office at 10:30 a.m. and started my work as per schedule. There was a status call at 11 a.m. followed by scrum call at 12 noon. By the time it ended, I was worn out. Then, I received the mail at 12:30 from the admissions office (XUB) confirming my admission to the BM program. I was left astounded on the spot. I am sure many of them would have had the same feeling realizing that they were to be a part of XIMB, a legacy of 30 years.
