My second year of PGP course in IIM Indore began with a session called BGS – “Business Government & Society.” This two-credit course is designed for a student to understand how a business organization can influence the government of the state and society to shift both culturally and economically.
Even in the hectic and crazy as anything schedule of a B-School to have a 10 session course condensed into a 2 day marathon is not very common. And when you don’t even have an iota of an idea about the course it creates a strange feeling of excitement as well as nervousness. The course I am referring to here is the ‘Design Thinking Workshop’.
B-Schools are known for their quirky way of learning. We come from a background where there is huge weightage given to theoretical learning be it your schools or graduation. Everyone focuses on the theories and concepts learned. Whereas in b-schools we get to learn about real life situations one face. It is not only about the business world but also about the personal life. Subjects like Organisation Behaviour and Human Resource Management (OB-HR) bounds you to introspect about yourself and your behaviour with others. In a way, it makes you a better person and I think that plays a very important role in making life of a IIM graduate successful.
IIM Indore Campus is located on hilltop with a large amount of Flora and Fauna. The Rainy season at IIM Indore would be a USP for this campus.
IIM Udaipur had the distinct pleasure of being one of the first new IIMs to shift into its permanent campus. The campus in question is one of India’s largest, spanning over around 300 acres of land. Its got all the usual necessities, like a library, working classrooms, hostel rooms, night canteens, mess etc. On top of that what it also does have are huge artificial lakes which personify the very character of the city that hosts this great institution, Udaipur, also known as the city of lakes. It’s surrounded by hills and hence provides great views and an even better jogging track.
My IIM Indore journey has been one hell of a roller coaster ride with a lot of ups and downs. But after staying for over 4 years in this beautiful campus, a lot of beautiful memories have been imprinted on my mind and to chose one amongst those will be an injustice to others. But one of the most beautiful memories in my campus is when I met my best friend for the first time. I was having problems getting adapted to the new environment, away from home and my reserved nature was just adding on to the problems that I was facing. One day, I broke down into tears and decided to head back home as it was getting too much for me. It was then that this girl spotted me crying during the lunch break and approached me. She was too friendly and tried her best to make me laugh. Once I stopped crying, then I told her how badly I was missing home. She then told me how her situation at that time was similar to mine but still, she was somehow holding it together. I didn’t know at that point of Time that it was going to be the starting of the most special bond of my life. After our conversation ended that day and we started heading back to our classes, she gave me a tight hug which just helped in easing out on my emotions. Since that day, we both started spending time with each other almost entirely. If not been her, I would have left the campus and this opportunity due to homesickness. I still fondly remember that day and her friendly smile with which she approached me.
Situated on the top of a hill, on the outskirts of the city, IIM Indore is a tourist stop in between the industrial area of Pithampur and the simple city of Indore. The sheer beauty of the drive up to the main building from the gate will surprise you. The meandering roads up the hillside, the lush green trees all around you and the dazzling lights of the city beneath if you happen to drive up at night, are all breath-taking. It’s the simple beauty of the campus which makes it unique. And what makes it even more so, is that it is scenic beauty where you least expect it, on the outskirts of a small industrial town – Pithampur. Perhaps this is the reason why this remains one of the lesser talked about qualities of the campus. People speak about the academics, and placements, and the events. But what escapes most conversations is the quiet serenity of the place.
