I have stayed here for 4 years already and I still can’t get enough of this place. Having come from Assam, a place known for the natural beauty it posses; I thought a 5 year stay in a city would be difficult for me. I would miss all the greenery, the cool breeze, the beautiful sunset but my campus for me turned out be my home away from home.
The unique thing in my campus is the large batch size. With the strength of over 1000 students combined in both years of PGP, IIM Indore surely stands out among other IIMs. The diverse culture of IIM Indore is something which we are really proud of. You can find all sorts of people here. It is very easy to make friends here because there is someone or the other who shares a common interest as you. For example, in my own case, I have made friends while playing badminton, table tennis and even over the counter strike. Friendships that I made here in my five-year stay here at IIM Indore is something which I will cherish forever. Life at IIM Indore is one of a kind experience. People here really know how to have fun. The life at IIM Indore is always hustling and bustling with something or another. People here are really active in extracurricular activities. More often than not you can find some event happening or people planning for any event. I have found people playing badminton at 3:00 A.M. in the morning and hell I even joined them for some knocks of my own. Another unique point of my campus is the city itself. Indore is famous all over India as the food capital of central India and there is nothing better than bonds people better than over food. The sheer no. of cafes in the city is just amazing. Exploring the city over the years with my friends has been my famous past time. The batch size of IIM Indore also offers a wide talent pool where everyone is good at one thing or another. People here are competitive that makes participating in anything a very fun contest. There are a lot of benefits to having a large student batch. You can learn a lot from people and their experiences from all walks of life. IIM Indore also places a lot of emphasis on diversity in the batch pool so you can interact with people from different geographical location, educational background etc. Interacting with such interesting people is really a unique experience. At the start of our educational journey, there are events like section wars etc. which are a really fun way to break the ice and make good communications. So this was my take on one of the most unique things about my campus.
My campus is one of the most unique campuses a B-School can have. Situated on the outskirts of Rau, a small industrial town in Indore, the campus gazes upon the city of Indore from a magnificent hill. Resources are in plenty, ranging from 2 full sized professional gyms, an Olympic sized pool to amazing classrooms and hostels. The entire first year of my MBA had too little of time to explore the entire campus as there was always a new shortcut or a hidden passage to surprise you. After spending around 12 months here I can surely say that there is much more to explore and too little time. One of the most memorable experiences I had was my OB class in the second trimester. The class was discussing a famous case on ethics when a group of street actors burst on the scene and took the entire class by surprise. The actors were trying to simulate a situation in the case and did a wonderful job. We were taken aback initially but slowly realized that our professors had specially arranged for a renowned group of actors from Bhopal to act out the parts in the case which involved a massive protest outside a CEOs office. I realized then that teaching is much more than classroom learning and how the unique method of making us learn how to approach the problem instead of the actual solution is much more effective and useful. Apart from the various intricacies, the thing that is probably most unique about Indore is how all of the stakeholders starting from students and professors to the wonderful support staff stay together as a big joint family. People understand each other and make sure that you spend the most amazing time of your life surrounded by a solid support network.
Sitting in my consumer behaviour class, listening to my professor explaining the definition of culture “That complex whole that includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, laws, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society” the very first thing that strike my mind is my own institute IIM Udaipur. Here, we have a culture of humility and punctuality and diversity is respected and accepted. The core values are something that you can see in the pedagogy, administrative practices and student culture. IIMU creates an environment where the students can achieve their maximum potential by creating an ecosystem for great learning and character building. All the stakeholders whether the students, faculties or the alumni’s are involved in process of articulating the mission, core values and culture of the institute. Everyone on the campus is motivated to work hard. It is the result of this hard work that IIM Udaipur is ranked 13th in the Management category and 1st among the new IIMs in the latest NIRF rankings.
The most memorable classroom experience for me was during our sessions on “Design Thinking”. I realized this after I was inducted into my summer internship and we had the same sessions there again. This one subject strengthens the fact that MBA is not just about reading books and learning those regular courses with so many case studies and focusing on some prefixed domains, it is much more than that. This subject made us break our boundaries in the best way possible. We learnt different aspects of design, innovation, and field research in a fun way. All of us represented our ideas through charts, drawings, videos, presentations, etc. There was nothing called as right or wrong but it was about thinking and more thinking. It is amazing how it teaches us to improve our own perceptions and beliefs and keep iterating them till we realize we still are not even close to perfection. The inspirational stories of companies following Design thinking to come up with the most innovative products stirred us to think beyond our walls. Not only this we were also given a problem that we were supposed to solve using the concepts of design thinking, represent these in the class and take the feedback of actual stakeholders. It was so much fun working like this with a batch of 70 odd people coming up with so inspiring and engaging ideas and innovations. This also fostered the team working as we were supposed to work in the group of 5-6 people learning from each other’s perspective on different tasks allocated to us.
If b-schools are temples of Capitalism, we, its constituents are its ardent monks, training to skilled priests, preparing ourselves to serve the market which with its invisible hand does indeed work in mysterious ways.
It was the month of August when I first came to planet-I, that’s what we call it. Although all IIM campuses across the country are of national importance and unique in one or another way but IIM Indore is one of the most beautiful and clean green campuses among all IIMs.
IIM Indore or Planet-I as it is popularly and fondly called gives it’s every student an experience to cherish for a lifetime. Its uniqueness is reflected in numerous ways.
