"Be careful of the words you use to insult others because of most of them might be a clear reflection of your personality” – a thought conceived by Tshepo Koos Maluleke that maintains its veracity in almost every worldly situation. But since time immemorial, (let’s bring it forward to 1961 actually :p) it is common knowledge that the mystical world of an IIM unabashedly defies many concepts of the world outside it and the aforementioned thought also miserably fails to be an exception to it.
Roughly 9 months ago, on a very hot and humid morning, I had landed in Mumbai. I was going to join, much to the chagrin of my family, the National Institute of Industrial Engineering in Mumbai. Yes, my family was not happy with this decision of mine as I had decided to forego the chance to join some other institutions which, putting it bluntly, have a better PR agency or are attached to a greater brand.
Why MBA without a prior work experience? This is probably the most frequently asked question to every fresher who walks in for the dreaded interview rounds of every b-school in the country. More often than not, the answer to this question is the game changer. One of the reasons why I failed to clear the interviews in my first attempt was my ignorance to this question. My answers were very generic because I had no idea how life would be like for a fresher in a b-school. In this article, I will be sharing how life has been for me at NITIE.
Before joining our respective management schools, there was a sense of accomplishment having cracked the CAT and getting admission into one of the premier b-schools. I am sure quite a few of us felt that the road ahead was a cakewalk. Words from our friends, relatives, ex-colleagues and well-wishers only ended up reinforcing such thoughts. All this results in us, the incoming students, harbouring some myths in our minds while joining college. But, what we think we all know about being an MBA student isn’t necessarily true. Sharing some instances from my own life throughout the last year:
"Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things." -Dr. Peter F. Drucker
Any MBA aspirant about to join a Business School would hear a common myth, "You won't get time to even sleep at the Business School." Well yes, I can safely call this a myth from my experiences so far. The truth is that if one has their objectives of studying at the b-school clear, one can easily find the luxury of abundant time for everything.
