“Big”, I believe, is a very subjective word. Our definition of it changes over time. Something that we considered big as a child might not seem as big as we grow older. While this is true there are, however, certain occasions in all of our lives which are big irrespective of our distinctions. One such occasion is when we move into our own house. The sense of belonging, the pride of possession and the overarching peace that it brings are feelings not everyone is fortunate enough to experience. Being born in a lower middle-income group household, I had the unique opportunity of experiencing these feelings first-hand.

If I could draw a parallel, my academic journey may sound like that of an individual who has successfully made his way from a diminutive town to the upstate New York. In other words, I passed out of a hindi-medium government school with a modest background, completed my under graduation from one of the best under graduate college for management, gained experience in oil & gas industry for four years and now studying in one of the ivy league B-school of India, i.e., IIFT with a dream to become a renowned finance professional someday. From improving the basics of my English to convincing my father to complete my secondary education from a private school, from getting bullied in my higher school to clear entrance exams without any coaching and from sharpening my fundamentals of finance and stock market to managing money and investment, I have been preparing myself day and night to overcome all the challenges coming my way to become a professional in future. Being the eldest child in my family, I have seen the way my parents were struggling financially very closely. I didn’t have the luxury to own a smartphone, internet or other necessary items during my college days, but rather than feeling low, I pushed myself hard to survive without that and promised to purchase a smartphone the day I get placed and it happened as well. Neither I want to complain my parents or any other person, nor I wanted to struggle financially. So I always take help from the seniors/ mentors who guided me in all aspect of life and help me to succeed with limited resources.

Coming from a Tier 2 city, I have had a very limited exposure to Global Brands during my upbringing, Aditya Birla Group being one of them invokes some earnest nostalgia. It reminds me of the time when our family home was under construction in 2006, several bags of Ultratech Cement used to be present at the construction site. It became a regular sight every time I visited that place and now that I think of it, ABG has been an integral part of my life right from my formative years. Without any cognitive efforts, it was ingrained in my upbringing. I have always looked up to my father, he has been my role model and the excruciating efforts he has taken while fending for the family is surreal. I returned home after completing my engineering and was preparing to leave for my job. My family has always adhered by the notion “the family that dines together, stays together” and now that I was about to leave, it was more significant than ever. During one of these family suppers, we came across the “Khud Ko Kar Buland” TVC by Birla Sun Life Insurance that embarked on a journey of a single father taking care of his autistic son while working in a manufacturing unit. The 4-minute TVC spoke volumes about all the trials and tribulations the father-son duo had to go through daily and despite being bogged down by the circumstances, how they keep on moving ahead confidently. A serene silence pervaded the place. No words exchanged, just happy glances shared. Nothing beats that sense of accomplishment when you gift your Father something from your first salary, a symbolic gesture for passing the baton of responsibilities. Buying that Van Heusen shirt was an intense moment, it was like a baby step towards a lifelong dream.

With EY, a step towards building a better working world!

It was a cold January morning, precisely 16th of the month at 6:45 AM, when I woke up to finish my economics presentation, which is scheduled at 9.30 AM. At the same time, the much-awaited moment which was running in my mind all over the night i.e. Interview with Ernst & Young scheduled at 10.00 AM. All I am thinking is when the clock will tick 10. After a hasty presentation, I was just making myself comfortable.

The Night is Dark and full of Terror | Smrati Pahwa, IIFT

I suffered. I struggled. I saw my loved ones die. I saw the nightmares no one saw. I knew the stories that were long lost. And I survived. To rise as the most powerful person of the seven kingdom, Bran the Broken. Pushed from a tower, crippled, yet escaped for the sake of destiny. Things didn’t end here. I dreamed of a three eyed raven calling me. Was this my fate? I wanted to follow it and I did. But in this journey, I lost all of my loved ones and was lost somewhere behind. I met the three eyed raven. I escaped the army of the dead and survived once again. What was even so strong in my fate that I kept on surviving. I was not the crippled one now. Not even the stark. I turned numb. I was the past, the present and the future. I could see things nobody could. I know things nobody knew. I was now a threat, to the army of the dead, to the Night King. He was before me. And he came, destroying the night’s watch, multiplying the enemy of dead. And he came, almost killing. And I survived for the third time. Not to suffer once again. But to accept the fate. To be the king. To be the most powerful of all. “So, Why do you think I came all this way?”

One of the largest conglomerates of India that has witnessed the country in turbulent times and in times which are rosy such as these, The Aditya Birla Group has touched millions of lives and has certainly created a great impact by making living easier. And I cannot agree more that it has been big in my life since my childhood. The earliest memory is of my mother packing my lunch for school in Freshwrapp which would remain fresh and hot for hours.
