All of us get ready at 8:45 in the morning to attend classes in Finance, Marketing, Operations and Organisation Behaviour. In the process of learning new things, we tend to lose the creativity that we possess. This hypothesis was challenged on a fine Saturday morning where instead of attending our regular classes, we were going to attend a subject known as “Design Thinking”. The course was designed in such a way that we were challenged to overcome our so called conventional boundaries and were encouraged to think out of the box.
Initially, we were reluctant to participate in the activities that were conducted by our Design Thinking instructor as we were not able to understand it’s significance or importance in our lives. But once we understood the logic behind it we participated in it and we came up with some crazy but extraordinary ideas for finding a solution for existing societal problems. We were required to first present our ideas using conventional method of drawing or writing on the chart paper then we were asked to go one step ahead and design a prototype for the same. This allowed us to understand how different people could solve the same problem differently.
This design thinking course provided me with a different perspective for analysing a problem. Here, instead of tackling the problem as a whole we need to breakdown the problem in small pieces and solve it piece by piece which will allow us to reach to the same solution in less time as compared to conventional methods.
In India, the telecom sector is a highly competitive industry which has forced the industries to innovate the services that they are currently providing. I think I could use my skills that I acquired in the Design thinking course to find an innovative solution for the Telecom arm of the Aditya Birla Group that is “Idea”. The telecom sector is currently under consolidation which is a result of tariff war and additional services that the companies are providing to their customers. I think that I might be able to increase the value proposition of the company by providing customers with the services that they actually require and are willing to pay for the same.
