As an MBA aspirant, I used to believe that cracking B-school entrance exams was the ultimate challenge. But soon enough, I realized it was merely the first stepping stone. After rigorous preparation for GDPI and a packed interview season, it became clear—there’s more ground to cover before joining a B-school.

During my GDPI prep, mentors, current MBA students, and alumni consistently emphasized preparing for the academic rigor and summer internship placements by building essential skills. They often referred to this 2-3 month phase before joining as the “golden period”—a rare window to upskill and get a head start.

So, drawing from their guidance, I’ve compiled a list of must-have skills and recommended certifications to help you make the most of this time.

Part 1: Core Skills Every MBA Aspirant Should Learn

These are foundational skills that will ease your transition into B-school life and help you manage academic workloads better.

1. Microsoft Excel

If there's one skill unanimously emphasized by everyone in the MBA ecosystem, it's Excel. Whether it’s academic assignments, financial modeling, or data analysis—Excel is everywhere. Start with basic functions but aim to explore features like VLOOKUP, IF statements, Pivot Tables, Conditional Formatting, Filters, and Data Validation. Don't stress if you're not an expert—most programs do cover this, but having a head start helps.
