Just like any other MBA aspirant, I also dreamt of being in an IIM and so, I began preparing for CAT and after the long selection process, finally, I landed a spot at IIM Jammu and then the first disappointment hit me - "Jammu isn't cold"; I repeat! It isn't cold, so everyone who has a misconception just like I did, get your facts right. I mean it is extremely cold in winters but it's also very hot in the summers.
It all started as a dream; one affirmative mail from one of the most premium institutes of India had propelled me into the realm of instant stardom among my friends, family and social acquaintances. The IIM brand, one of the most coveted brands for any student aspiring to have a career in the corporate world, had accepted me for their MBA program and instantaneously, I had transformed into the metaphorical ‘Sharma Ji ka Beta’, who is supposed to be an inspiration and a role model for learning among his contemporaries, according to Indian parents.
When I entered the much talked about red brick-walled buildings of IIM Lucknow, I was just another of the many starry-eyed engineers who had finally put behind her years of endless dry code, years of shop floor sweat and grime, years of a stream she may never have taken if not for ‘the kid next door’! “You can be free after your 10th std. This is the most important exam of your life”, said the parent to boy/girl wonder. The 15-year-old kid beamed with joy thinking that the ordeal will soon be over. And that they will step into the brave new world as a free being. Wonder kid was expected to top the class, secure seat in the top institution, graduate with a 7-figure salary, marry a spouse of their parents’ choice and be the role model the world has never ever seen. This impressive castle of dreams was conceived even before the little one was conceived. Funny how most parents share the same dream. Math dictates that there can be only one first rank. Why can parents not accept the overwhelming odds that their kid could be mediocre? ‘Well, noooooo. Because it is my kid and my kid has my genes’. Ahem, okay, that explains it.
One month at XLRI! It couldn’t have been better. It is just like a roller coaster ride and people say that it has just begun! One month, and I have gone through almost all the human emotions possible - Joy, Sadness, Stress, Anger, Fear; you name it and it is there. But the output has been just splendid.
IIM Shillong and Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS) are often counted amongst the top-15 management institutes of India. The highest salary offered so far has been INR 14 Lacs per annum while the average salary is INR 9.5 lacs per annum. Last year the average CTC offered has been INR 8.3 lacs per annum. Incidentally, this is the 1st batch of outgoing students who are being awarded MBA degree from IFMR GSB, KREA University. Earlier, IFMR used to offer PGDM program.
