This is a story of a girl who had the heart & courage to go against the societal norms and her father who had the compassion to support her dreams. Let me take you through my journey. There is a place, Hesla, 45 kilometres away from Ranchi where I was born. I was supposed to go to Madarsa (a place where religious preaching is given) to pursue my education. But here I am today, in SPJIMR, projecting an image of transformation & hope. This is my story.
This one is a story of from one of the topmost b-schools based in Mumbai, and while such stories may be true on any campus, but I want to share this story because I know people can relate to it.
“Listen Mohit, we heard of a college in Mumbai that accepts CAT score. We came to know that you are currently studying there only. My daughter is a bit skeptical about whether to opt for it or not.”
An MBA was not really on my plan. It was rather an afterthought. After my under-graduation in mechanical engineering, I was focused on a career in public policy and diplomacy. I gave the civil services examination a good shot before I decided to let go and sat for CAT to forge an alternate career path. Meanwhile, before I joined IIM Rohtak, I spent a few months working in public sector consulting on some exciting projects like handicrafts rejuvenation.
It’s that time of the year again – ADMISSIONS! As I look at yet another set of shiny, suited-up candidates looking at new ways to answer the question “Why MBA” without mentioning money in it, I am reminded of my own ordeals last year. What began as my idea of entering the big, bad world outside had me introspecting and reflecting on my own actions more than any other experience in my life.
It is almost funny how little one observes when a set of conducts and choices, largely governed by one’s own personal range of emotions and perceptivity, gets metamorphosed. Although, that is principally subconscious in most cases and typically, an outcome of a dominant environment for a prolonged period of time that influences a sense of transformation, an MBA would tell you that he/she felt personally urged to act a certain way for good.
