Whenever children in the 90s belonging to middle-class families made an exuberant demand of any kind, the most common phrase that parents used to tell was “We are not Tata Birla”. Aditya Birla group and the Birla family as a whole have contributed immensely after independence to not only the economy of India but to the global economy as a whole. There are few companies in the world with such long heritage and name synonymous to trust and success. As mentioned in the round 1 rules, it’s absolutely impossible to find people who have never been touched by ABGLP group in some way in their entire life being in India.
Aditya Birla Group is one of India’s largest conglomerates and also claims to be the most international of the country’s major corporations. The company acts as a holding company for more than 72 manufacturing and services subsidiaries throughout India, and in Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Australia, China, Egypt, and Canada. I came to know about the company through my Industrial analysis subject.
In my life, I have travelled to different parts of India, since my father has a transferrable job. It’s not easy to know that you won’t be at a particular place for not longer than 3-4 years. Learning new cultures, languages, meeting new people, making new friends, it all seems difficult, especially to someone who is not so much of an extrovert. I remember, the first time I moved from my native place to Chhattisgarh, I failed in my exam in Hindi and Sanskrit. It was my first exposure to Sanskrit and the level of Hindi was a bit too much. It was hard to understand Hindi let alone converse, and this was when I was 9 years old. Because of this, it was really hard to make friends, since people weren’t really enthusiastic about talking in English when they already had friends who could talk in Hindi. It was a time when I was kind of depressed. But I, along with a lot of support from my family, had the will to not stop trying. Luckily I also was able to find a really good friend who helped me adjust myself to the new surroundings. Eventually I learnt the language and made a lot of friends. This was the single turning point in my life. If I had just given up then, then maybe I would have turned out to fail in other subjects as well. So, yes, Never give up, would be my motto.
What was India a century ago? Nothing but an opportunity waiting to be taken, a golden egg waiting to be hatched. The country of dreams that we see today didn’t look like it does today. World’s third largest railway system, world’s second largest road and highway infrastructure system, industries thriving with opportunities, and cities exploding with development – none of what we see today was there 100 years ago. This development was only possible by consistent committed effort by the public as well as the private players of the country. One of these private players is the Aditya Birla group. The organization’s contribution to the development of the nation has been across many dimensions including textiles, carbon, aluminum, mining, cement, telecom, synthetic, fibers and many more. The contribution of the organization has been such that it is unlikely that it has not contributed in our life in one way or the other. Majorly, the drivers of all the development of this economy have been highly contributed by the Aditya Birla group in some way or the other. Brands like Pantaloons, Van Heusen, Louis Phillip, Peter England, and Forever 21 represent India’s contribution to the fashion industry worldwide. Vodafone Idea’s cellular services are one of India’s major cellular service providers. Ultratech Cements and Aditya Birla Ultratech, have been the foundations of India’s infrastructure development spanning from villages to the major cities. Novelis Inc., the world’s largest recycler of aluminum has also helped in development of transportation, packaging, construction, industrial and consumer electronics industries.
ABG touches millions in the world. It is unlikely that you have never used a product, or travelled on a road or visited a site where ABG has not contributed in some way. Its presence in your life is massive.
