Aditya Birla Group's presence is almost everywhere in the daily life of many people right from cement industry, Telecom industry to Retail industry. Everyday, I come across many products under ABG's portfolio which kind of reminds me many memories. I still remember the shopping I did for my first interview to buy formals and after spending many hours I finally tried Allen Solly's formals and after that it has become my favorite brand. Thanks to brands like Allen Solly, Peter England, VanHeusen for making life easier to pickup branded clothes be it for interviews or casual outings. They have played a crucial role in introducing foreign brands to the people.
Have you been overlooked? Rejected? Dejected? I have, on more than one occasion but I shall share one such instance in the interest of time. It all started at just before the end term exams for the 7th semester of my engineering college. I had already received a campus placement at a company in Bombay however I was notified that I would be held from giving an exam due to shortage of attendance and would have to reappear for the whole semester to attend the classes for that subject. That’s where it all started. While my batchmates started their careers, I was attending classes for one subject in the 9th semester. I had also lost the offer I had at hand. It was humiliating for one but at the same time I knew I couldn’t let that get to my head. As was no longer eligible to sit for placements, I decided to learn as much as I could with the time that I had at hand.
From my mother packing my lunch in freshwrapp so that it remains fresh and tasty even after hours to me toasting sandwiches on the foil with an iron inside my hostel room, from my father buying his formal suits from Peter England, to me buying my first MBA suit from Van Heusen, Aditya Birla Group and its brands have touched all the aspects of my life. I still remember when for the first time Pantaloons was opened in my home town, there was so much craze among people about the various stylish clothes and jewelry present there. Even today when I go back to my hometown, I know where I will get my kind of dresses with a lot of variety. Likewise, Aditya Birla Group touches millions of lives all over the world every day. And it is not just the urban population, the rural population is equally reached out by the group by their contribution to various government schemes like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, MGNREGA, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, Rural Livelihood Mission and many more. They keep giving back to the society through their CSR activities. It makes its equal share of contribution to the environment by helping in the Renewable Energy Development Program. The conglomerate is contributing towards the economy of India by helping start-ups through its Bizlabs program that helps the start-ups them gain access to market and customers so that they can grow at a faster rate. They also provide venture capitals and investment to the start-ups to incubate them. #TAPMI #ABGLPWooMe
Challenges are inevitable, but overcoming them is purely our choice. This is the difference that distinguishes people into what they want and what they really achieve. Some challenges come to test our mettle and push us beyond our boundaries. One such challenge had come my way after I completed my two years of my work experience in telecom. I wanted to enter into the business side of things and decided to pursue an MBA. When I started this journey, I come across some stories of how some people cracked CAT exam in 6 months, whilst other took 6 years. There was a whole spectrum of success and failure stories and legends and it was intimidating, yet exciting to start this journey.
Becoming an MBA and leading a business has always been the ambition. But in this journey there have been a lot of ups and downs and in that process a lot of learning happened. 2017 CAT, the first stepping stone to the journey and I fail to climb it as my scorecard showed 84.46 %ile, which was not enough to get me a good b-school. And this resulted in the loss of self-confidence because being a bright student since school comes with a lots of pressure from family, teachers and even friends in a direct or an indirect form. Next target, crack CAT 2018. But it was not going to be easy as I would have to either start working or take a year gap and prepare. I chose not to work, but the pressure of not doing anything apart from preparing for CAT was killing me. One night I meet up with my school buddy and what we end up doing is starting a company on that day itself. Trek-Buds, was the name. We both were trek enthusiast and decided to take that hobby as a way to earn some money and try to get away from the guilt of not doing anything productive. Wasn’t really very easy as this was a first venture for both of us and despite my specialization in marketing, we did not have a very clear idea of how to go about the promotions. We yet somehow managed to gather all the resources needed which included a transport provision, food vendor, Instagram page, Whatsapp broadcasts, etc. We received a great response of 45 people for the very first trek. I don’t know whether to name it as beginners luck or what but we felt lucky. And we did manage to deliver an fun-adventurous and satisfying trek at the end making 7,500 bucks for each one of us. This made me feel that not all first stepping stones would be bad. This was just the start, next week we had planned a trek at Maharashtra’s highest peak, Kalsubai. A whooping 94 people registered for it. The confidence boost crossed the clouds but also did the fear and anxiety of handling 94 people and safely getting them back from an altitude of 5400 ft. There were a lot of difficulties we faced in that trek. Situations where we had never been before like people getting lost and shortage of food. But since then we have learned a lot. 12 treks in total and a net profit of 1,23,000 collectively. This has made me understand that no matter what everything happens for a reason and don’t worry, something better will always be waiting for you. By the way CAT 2018 scorecard showed 93.68 %ile. And here I am today studying at TAPMI, Manipal.
