The interview below was done with Rashmi Bansal (IIM Ahmedabad, Class of 93’) in October 2013 when she visited IIM Lucknow for a guest talk organized by the Entrepreneurship cell at IIM Lucknow.
I have always been a shy person-mixing with people never came easily to me. It didn’t particularly bother me, however, since I wasn’t planning on becoming the next Ms. Congeniality at the Miss World contest. I had as normal a social life my other peers and fared well at my workplace since I always delivered on my assignments. In a nutshell, I was perfectly satisfied with this aspect of my personality and saw no reason to change. All of this came crashing down when I joined an MBA program in one of the top global B Schools, because, suddenly a single word became my nemesis-“networking”.
The sun shone down endlessly, without any respite, as if with a vengeance to absorb every drop of water that existed around the area. Despite the heat, I walked around with a determined look from one shop to another in the village, talking to retailers and taking a sip of water from my mineral water bottle to replenish the water I was losing quick and fast. My mind ran back to my CAT preparation days “Water in a tank is leaking from a hole. A motor running, pumps in water to the tank at a particular rate … and so on” and I gave myself a wry smile and walked to the next store to continue the never ending push for targets.
Pranav Patil was among the top 5 students in the class of 2013 at IIM Lucknow. During his tenure at TCS and Prestels, he offered varied consulting services to government institutions industrial organizations. An Industrial Engineer from VIT Pune, he decided to walk his own path by venturing into a start up that aims to simplify management consulting.
In many top schools in India including some old IIMs, poor placement policies are ruining careers and also the reputation of business schools.
