ADITYA BIRLA GROUP - Touching Lives Forever | Simran Sachi, IIFT

a) There are companies, which provide us with goods and essential products, and then there are companies, which even become a part of our lives and witness our life experiences with us. It’s difficult to pen down how Aditya Birla Group has continuously affected my life in every good way possible. When I opened my eyes to this world, ABG welcomed me and introduced me to its construction, the place I call my home. “The engineer’s choice” has been my parents' choice too. All the memories of my childhood are associated with that house. I thank ABG for nurturing me since then. Throughout school life, my mother’s love kept reaching me, through those delicacies wrapped in the Hindalcos Aluminium foil. Our relationship has been very long and is still going strong. While leaving home for 4 years, for pursuing higher studies, Aditya Birla group came along the train journey with me, so that I don’t feel homesick and introduced me to the new life I have ahead. Birla Copper Limited gave me the confidence to keep dreaming big on my journey to a new place and surrounding. Every girl loves shopping, and I am unapologetic about not waiting for an occasion to shop my heart out. Be it a birthday party, or a wedding at home, ABFRL has made me look my best through its unmatchable apparel. Allen Solly’s formal attire is my lucky interview dress, which has helped me look presentable and crack every selection round with ease. I have been able to portray my confident self wearing them. ABFRL has been my one-stop shopping destination for years now. ABG has helped me communicate the happiest news of my life to my family sitting far away in another city, through the smartphone’s cover glass made by Hindalco Limited. ABG has connected so deeply and closely with my life unknowingly, that, it feels like a void when ABG is not involved.

Aditya Birla Group is a multinational conglomerate, operating in 35 countries with 120,000 employees having more than 15 brands. It is headquartered at Mumbai. Peter England, Allen Solly, Vodafone Idea, Ultratech Cement are some of its well-known brands. The brands of ABG that I came across the most is in Fashion retail. I often buy clothes from Pantaloons whenever I want quality products for affordable prices. In my family, Pantaloons is the goto place for Ethnic wear and Kids wear. Trousers from Peter England and Shirts from Allen Solly has become a must to look sharp and professional for any corporate event. Apart from that almost every Indian use Freshwrap aluminium foil in their day to day life. Indians love food and anything that keeps the food warm and tasty needs to be in our good books, Freshwrap fits the bill perfectly. Ultratech Cement is synonymous to making strong and long lasting houses. Its tag line “The engineer’s choice” is the testament to their confidence for delivering quality product. I remember my father insisting on using Ultratech cement for renovation of our house, terming it as a long term investment. “An Idea can change your Life”- nobody can get this phrase out of their head. It gave me an instant connect to the brand and made Idea (Now Vodafone Idea) my preferred telecom brand.

My year of Birth 1995 has incidentally coincided with the launch of the new corporate logo of the Aditya Birla Group -The rising sun, During my childhood, I spent much of my time watching Television by which I admired to see the logo and that became the first image that I drew in my sketching book. As in the school days, we used to have the rule of wearing a civil dress in one of the days of the week which were brought from Allen Solly-Friday Dressing, Why So Serious. My father was a gazetted officer, he always used to shop his shirts from the Peter England brand that had the class and honesty in it. The brand was positioned well in the market with the tagline “Honest Shirt”. Along with the shirts from Louis Philippe – The upper Crest which had the elite quality of products with a great finish.

If I could draw a parallel, my academic journey may sound like that of an individual who has successfully made his way from a diminutive town to the upstate New York. In other words, I passed out of a hindi-medium government school with a modest background, completed my under graduation from one of the best under graduate college for management, gained experience in oil & gas industry for four years and now studying in one of the ivy league B-school of India, i.e., IIFT with a dream to become a renowned finance professional someday. From improving the basics of my English to convincing my father to complete my secondary education from a private school, from getting bullied in my higher school to clear entrance exams without any coaching and from sharpening my fundamentals of finance and stock market to managing money and investment, I have been preparing myself day and night to overcome all the challenges coming my way to become a professional in future. Being the eldest child in my family, I have seen the way my parents were struggling financially very closely. I didn’t have the luxury to own a smartphone, internet or other necessary items during my college days, but rather than feeling low, I pushed myself hard to survive without that and promised to purchase a smartphone the day I get placed and it happened as well. Neither I want to complain my parents or any other person, nor I wanted to struggle financially. So I always take help from the seniors/ mentors who guided me in all aspect of life and help me to succeed with limited resources.

Coming from a Tier 2 city, I have had a very limited exposure to Global Brands during my upbringing, Aditya Birla Group being one of them invokes some earnest nostalgia. It reminds me of the time when our family home was under construction in 2006, several bags of Ultratech Cement used to be present at the construction site. It became a regular sight every time I visited that place and now that I think of it, ABG has been an integral part of my life right from my formative years. Without any cognitive efforts, it was ingrained in my upbringing. I have always looked up to my father, he has been my role model and the excruciating efforts he has taken while fending for the family is surreal. I returned home after completing my engineering and was preparing to leave for my job. My family has always adhered by the notion “the family that dines together, stays together” and now that I was about to leave, it was more significant than ever. During one of these family suppers, we came across the “Khud Ko Kar Buland” TVC by Birla Sun Life Insurance that embarked on a journey of a single father taking care of his autistic son while working in a manufacturing unit. The 4-minute TVC spoke volumes about all the trials and tribulations the father-son duo had to go through daily and despite being bogged down by the circumstances, how they keep on moving ahead confidently. A serene silence pervaded the place. No words exchanged, just happy glances shared. Nothing beats that sense of accomplishment when you gift your Father something from your first salary, a symbolic gesture for passing the baton of responsibilities. Buying that Van Heusen shirt was an intense moment, it was like a baby step towards a lifelong dream.
